I've lost my share of turkeys and even two baby goats to the migration of coyotes into SC. They always run when seen or spotted at night with a light. They've never shown aggression to me and I doubt very seriously they have anywhere else. A rabid one might turn and fight but they would be few and far between. The biggest problem with coyotes is the damage they do on livestock and poultry. They will wipe you out in a matter of days.
I've had one so brave as to chew through a screen door on one of my turkey houses. It killed 9 turkeys and only ate one of them. I don't mind them taking one or two but to kill them needlessly is why I hate the coyote. They were too large to get through the hole in the door. The only thing that has worked for me is traps. The problem with trapping is you catch all kinds of stuff, mostly animals you never wanted to catch to start with. I've caught racoons, bobcats, foxes, opossums, and even someone's cat. The bad thing about traps is you almost always have to kill the animal to get it out of the trap. They will tear you to pieces if you try to release them.. I did manage to let the house cat go though.
I've had several buddies say they could take care of them for me, but none of them have been very successful. The problem is they know you're there long before you see them. If you're hunting with a bow, it's going to be near impossible. You need a centerfire that will provide range. My buddies have killed a few but never enough to matter. The black ones just give me the creeps. I hate them.
