I was planning on trying Varget powder to reload some 270 win rounds and later some .223.  Anyone have any experience with this powder in a 270?  I will be using a Remington 700 if it matters.

Hornaday list some loads for the 270 with varget, but the recomended powder is 4831. I use varget in my 223 and 243, when loading for larger cal. I use imr4831 or imr 7828.

Go ahead and use it. I use it in my 30/06 and .270, the preferred load in the .270 being 45 grains with a 130 gr. Sierra GameKing, and a CCI 200 primer.

Varget might work well in the 270 with 90-110 grain bullets but with 130 and up I would stick to the 4350-4831 burning range. It works really well in the 223 as vel is higher and accuracy is just about as good as H335 and the others. At least in my rifle it is.  Have also used it with a 125g in the 30-06 with good results.

The Varget powder has burning characteristics similar to IMR4064 which is one of my favorite powders in the .270 Winchester. Varget is an import from Australia. It is supposed to be less susceptible to extremes of temperature than other powders, so the loads that work in the summer will still develop the same pressures in the cold of winter. Varget may not be the highest pressure load for the fastest bullet but it is a very uniform burning powder. I have had exellent accuracy with Varget in the .35 Rem., .243Win., 7-08, .308 Win, and other calibers. I would reccomend using one bullet weight for the .270, I like 140grain Hornady myself. About 44grains of Varget should work well with a 140grain bullet. Good luck hunting!

Ditto on what Duffy said. I use Varget alot. 223 Rem, 25-06, 260 Rem, and in my 270. In the 25-06, 260 and 270 I use it only in my Varmint loads with lighter bullets. (25-06, 75 gr Vmax), (260, 95 gr Vmax & 100 gr SP), (270, 100 gr SP)
