NEF vs Encore ?
« on: August 26, 2008, 02:05:27 AM »
Looking to put together a 50cal ML - 20a slug combo gun. (thumbhole stock).

1) I could buy the 20ga USH thumbhole for $315.00 and add a ML barrel $100.00 ?
2) T/C pro hunter 50 cal for $600.00 and add a 20ga barrell.

Is the T/C worth twice the price ?
How do the actions compare on the TC and NEF ?
How do the saftey's differ ?

This will be a hunting gun, Eastern Woods, most shots under 100 yards, I will most likley have the stock cut down as this will be a youth gun (3 kids)

Thanks,
Nick

I have owned both.
At 75 yards, the deer ain't gonna see the $300 difference.
Only concern right now is that the Encore barrel is available
on the shelf and the NEF barrel may not be due to the takeover.

You can buy a Stainless NEF .50 Sidekick from Cabelas for less than the price of an Encore barrel.  I like the Encore but it's just too expensive IMO.

I've had both also and at least to me there was just not enough if any dif other than T/C does a great job of marketing thier product but there are still many of the same issues between the 2 guns. I have gotten rid of all my encore stuff finally. If I would of kept what I had with the Thompsons I would have probly 6-7 guns right now when in fact I have 27 H&R NEF's nuf said. Kurt

Also I would just add there are way more options on stocks and such to dress the H&R's up than what T/C offers.

The fit and finish of the Encores is better than the Handis, but I would buy the Handis instead  simply because of price. The only real advantage of the Encore, to me, is that of over the counter barrel fit. Handis have to be factory fit because of looser tolerances at the NEF factory.

I know it was not in the original question but another option is the CVA Optima Elite which is similar to the Encore but a lot less expensive. Now that they are using the Bergarra barrels the one I just picked up looks very nice. Have not had time to shoot it yet. I have a .270 barrel and the 12 ga. barrel as well as the .50 ML (all stainless). I do own a Huntsman with the .50ML barrel but do not have the shotgun barrel for it. I would not spend the money for the Encore unless I really wanted the gun for some reason???

I own both.  NEF is a great gun for the price and accurate.  Will never get rid of mine. But there is no comparison in overall quality and comfort in shooting.  Encore all the way.
