Let's See How Long It Takes Ilion -***It's Back***303 Days***
« on: August 26, 2008, 11:55:33 AM »
I haven't posted here much but stop by occasionally to see what is going on.  Just though some of you might be interested to to see how long things are taking at the new facility.  I took my frame to the PO on 8-26-08 and will post an update when it returns if anyone is interested.  It is to be fitted with a synthetic stock,  BP barrel, .357mag, and a .44mag barrel.

Got all excited today when I got an email saying my gun had been shipped. Wasn't any tracking info in the email so I called, since someone has to be home to sign for delivery. Got told "Ooops, we meant we shipped it from Ilion to Gardner, not you."  They did the same thing when they shipped it from Gardner to Ilion back on July 7th.  It first got to Gardner on June 16th. I hope it doesn't take three weeks to ship from Garner to me like it took them to send it to Ilion.

I wonder what would be the outcome if they loose or the action barrel gets misplaced ?
I ask because when shipped by UPS in the remarks comment I entered the item being shipped @ the serial number of the action
I have a a confirmation on delivery from UPS to Remington
Tim: how would Remington handle that problem if lost????
I sent the action to them so mine will not need to go to the old address
I will Waite to see if Kevin get his return before I try again too see the progress report he got ! week on me as far as when it was shipped. ???

Blackpowder season is October 11-17 in NC. Have a big deer I'm tracking in the National Forest across the street from my house (I can walk to all five of my deerstands). Would prefer my first shot through my new Muzzleloader be at a piece of paper, not a deer. Also spotted some LARGE black bear tracks in the corn field that borders the woods. My BC may get to do something other than knock over silhouettes before I head to the mountains in December after all.

Lonewolf,

If UPS looses it when it's being shipped to the mfr, the insurance claim would be between the sender and UPS. If it gets lost on the return trip from H&R/Rem, the insurance claim would be between them and UPS. Rem would get reimbursed from UPS and Rem could replace the firearm I would imagine. That could be a sticky wicket if  there are multiple barrels previously fitted to the lost frame, the loss amount could be for considerable more than what the insurance covers if a person only insured it for the min $100. Let's hope we don't have to find out!!! :'(

That would be on their dime, both replacing it and fitting any prefitted barrels to it.

I took my frame to the PO on 8-26-08 and will post an update when it returns

NY received mine on 7/25, then it took 7 days just to check it in.  Now for the last 7 days the tracking website has said "Repairman is in the process of servicing the firearm/part." (I thought it took 20 minutes to install a new barrel?)

This time away from home is not bad yet, accept the fact they are fixing a brand new barrel that was installed so loose it rattled when you carried it.

Little do they know the results of this "trial" have me looking at a Howa or Savage in .308 over a new Remington as my next purchase  :-\

My friend has both a new Howa & a new Savage.  Having shot both of them recently, I'd buy a Remington hands down.

XxLT250RxX,
Here's what my experience has been so far.  I shipped my 44mag handi directly to Ilion on July 2nd, shortly after the move from Gardner.  Requested that they check the fit and accuracy of the barrel, as I could never get it to shoot as well as I thought it should.  Figured they were busy with the recent move, but i'm not in a fanatical hurry as long as they get things right.  It was checked in (given a repair order number) on July 15.  On August 5, I called and was told that the repair department had replaced the barrel, and the gun was now at the testing gallery.  Given the recent move, I was quite pleased at how quickly they had fixed it.  Easily less than the 6-8 weeks suggested on the Customer Service web page.  So, I asked if it was possible to have a 223 accessory barrel fitted to the gun while it was there, and they said yes, but it would have to go back to the beginning of the line.  Since that time, the web page has listed my gun as being in the repair shop.  My guess is that repairs are probably handled quicker than accessory barrel requests, but time will tell.  I will probably call them again after the end of the month to check on the status of my gun, and I will report back to you all then.  As I said, I'm feeling pretty patient and don't expect miracles in turn-around time.  Gun season doesn't start here (Indiana) until November 15, and if necessary I can hunt with my muzzleloader.

I appreciate all the info.  I knew going in this was going to take a while and that's not a problem.  I bought the rifle new and had it about 2 months before I even fired the first shot with it. I did not buy it necessarily to hunt with so no problem with a hunting season deadline.  I have been involved with other firearms related transactions that took from three months to a year to complete.  I think I have the patients required.  I am not saying I wouldn't like to have it back by the end of next week but if it shows up as a Christmas present that will be fine as long as everything is fitted correctly.  Don't want it to have to make two trips.

There are a bunch in line ahead of ya!!  :'(

I bought my second Handi earlier his year and have shot less then twenty rounds thru it, mostly cast loads. Now I discovered what looks like pitting in that barrel about 3 inches from the chamber. I doubt it is pitting but could be toolmarks when the barrel was rifled. Being in Canada I can't just ship the Rifle to New York, what to do ???

Contact one of the two H&R authorized service dealers listed in the FAQs, if the barrel is defective, they should be able to return it for repair.  ;)

Please let us know how that turns out.

Update:  the tracking web site still says "repairman is in the process" so I called thinking maybe they don't have a barrel.
They told me mine just came back from testing and should be shipped soon.  they said they "refit the barrel and forend".
He said it still is the same barrel.  I hope they can tighten up a loose barrel without changing the frame.  I will take a good look once I get it back.

The only way to tighten a loose barrel is with a new barrel, a shim which they have never done in the past or possibly installing an oversize hinge pin which would be something new, but if they did that, previously fitted barrels would no longer fit. In the past, what they put on the invoice didn't always prove to be what was actually done, but that was then, this is now. :-\

Called exactly one week after USPS said it had been delivered. Lady said they had received it and it had been logged in.  She said they "were waiting on parts".

Just to keep you updated. Ilion has had my reciever approximatly 7 weeks.  Today I received a letter from them (see below).  Keep in mind I used the order form from there website.  The cost of the stock, the three barrels and the $15.00 fee for fitting each of them and $15.00 for shipping came out to $397.50.  I did not include tax.  My check cleared the bank 4 weeks ago.  Looks like they want a few more dollars.  Must be the tax.  I will call tomorrow.

I'm still waiting to see what they do for the increases they put on my invoice as well.  They were to credit my account and call me with how much and where the missing parts are.  Been at deer camp for the last 8 days, but the wife said they didn't call the house.  Will have to see if I can find time tomarrow to make the call, not sure what I'll have waiting at work after being gone a week. :o  By the way, camp was good, to hot to hunt most of the time.  One of the new 357 barrels got a turkey for me and one for my 14 year old boy.  He also got his first deer, a nice, fat muley buck, rack not real big but he was sure in great shape with a nice heavy body.  3 maybe 4 year old.  The old man (me) got 3 does and then we headed back to home to get the deer in before they spoiled, temp was in the high 60's and still in high 40's to low 50's at night.  Oh well, only a 270 mile round trip home and back to camp.  Hope everyone has a great and safe season, We will be going out till the last tag is filled or dark-thirty on Nov 30th which ever comes first!  DP

I did call and after the usual 15 minute wait I did get to talked to a very helpful gentleman.  Did not get his name.  He pulled my info up on his computer.  After a few minutes of looking it over he seem somewhat puzzled.  Then he asked if I had included tax.  I said no and he said that  must be the problem.  I ask him if I could give him a credit card number for the remaining thirteen or so dollars.  He then put me on hold and when he came back he said they would accept my check as paid in full.  He also said they are still waiting on parts.

I am not sure the tax thing was the problem.  There would have been more than $13.00 tax on $397.00.  Also, I am not sure they should collect state tax since I don't live in that state.

I sent my handi rifle frame off to Ilion on Oct. 8th to be fitted with a new .243 barrel.  I called today (Nov. 5th) to check on the progress (because they had charged my credit card) and a customer service rep. told me that it shipped yesterday.  I sure hope he wasn't pulling my leg!  Deer season comes in this Saturday and my son sure would like to have his gun back!  I'll post again when the gun arrives.  Keep your fingers crossed for my boy!
