short .222 barrel

I swapped for a factory Super 14 .222 barrel with a welded on extension to make it rifle legal.  I used it for a while for varmint hunting and it is a good shooter.  I haven't used it for a couple years since I got a good shooting .204 barrel.  I got it out of storage yesterday and see the welding and the extension are rusty, and the rest of the barrel is fine.  This has me thinking of a short barrel for one of my pistols.  I already have a Super 14 in .222.

Any thoughts about what length to shorten this to?  Are there other interesting chamberings that I might want to get this rechambered to?  I have access to a lathe, so shortening it is no big deal.  Re-chambering is a little harder.

Hey Keith,

If you're going to leave it a 222 Rem, I wouldn't go any shorter on the barrel than 12".   Doubt you'll get much performance shorter than that.

If you do decide to rechamber, will you stay rimless or consider going rimmed?   

Rimless: 222 Imp, 222 Lynx, 222 Mag, 222 Mag Imp, 223, 223 Imp.   

Rimmed: 222R, 224DA, 225 Win, 226JDJ.

There might be others I didn't think of.

The longer the barrel length on all of these the better IMO.

Naturally I'd go with the 222 Lynx, 224DA or 226JDJ (just because I'm a "wild" kind of guy).    ;)

It is my understanding that you cant chamber a contender in 225 win, as they have to high a chamber pressure. so why even suggest it?

Good catch - thanks.   When I started thinking about what would use up the 222 Rem chamber length and the .225 Win based wildcats that are safe in the Contender I inadvertantly added the parent cartridge.

Add some others I thought of instead Keith... the 22 TC/U, 219 Zipper, 219 DW.   Not sure (depends on current chamber length probably), but maybe the 22 Vartag Turbo would work too.

Also forgot what would be my first choice, the 22 Super Bower.

I have a factory 222 octagon in 10 inch and I love the way it shoots Have only shot it a few times but love the feel. had to put on a set of limsaver grips to reduce recoil. I had a 14 inch in BBL but never liked the weight and balance.
