A very good and light weight firestarter is cotton balls they light quickly and burn for a while and they are very cheap.

Most stores that carry wood stove accessories handle a fire starting product. I don't remember the name of it but I've used it and it works great.

Bargain basement candles, cut them 1 1/2 " long, dip the wick in warmed liquid wax and it will burn after getting wet. Another emergency fire starter use dryer lint. You can pack enough into a bean dip can to start twenty fires and it's free. Can be started with a flame or a spark. I used it with a flint and steel starting fire in a contest.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Fine steel wool is also a great fire starter and all it needs is a spark from a 9v battery.

rub petroleum jelly into those cotton balls and they will burn even better and be waterproof too!

Cut a straw in half, seal one end with heat, hold over a flame and pinch it shut. Use your vaseline soaked cotten balls to fill the straw, pack with a qtip. Seal when full like you did the other end. Waterproof, slit open and light, burns hot. Instead of cotton balls I save cotton from pill btls. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Fill the holes in a paper egg carton with sawdust, then fill them with melted parifin. Cut them apart. Easy to light and makes quite a fire, I just made and used one today.

Old Boy Scout project from 35 years ago I had forgot all about. We made them for survival kits we sold as a fundraisers. Burned like hades even in the rain. The fiber egg cartons were easier to find then but the styrofoam would work now .

I'll second the birch bark. This is actaully very important to remember if you are ever out in the winter hunting or fishing and get soaken wet and have hypothermia. Even wet birch bark will start with one good kitchen match or a cigarette lighter, then the small pine twigs to get a real fire going. Could save your life   :)

Liquid Nails, its a construction adheasive that comes in a tube for a caulking gun. Let it dry in a big glob, it lights easy and burns hot for about 10 minutes.

I have a idea liquid nails rolled up in dryer lint. Might make for a fire starter that can go with a flame or a spark.

It isn't something to carry in a pack, but wouldn't the glue burn even better before it dried?. I'm thinking of the times my potbelly in the house is being stubborn, just run a bead down a stick.

Update-Don't light uncured liquid nails, while it does light even easier, once lit it turns into a very thin liquid and you have a molten burning stream that is hard to put out and goes everywhere.
