Can u match CMP 30-06 Greek loads, 63 lot 1007
« on: August 30, 2008, 02:02:09 PM »
My bolt action loves these hot Greek ball ammo.

If i were to purchase some pulled 150 or 152 bullets and used IMR 4895 to reload HXP cases how many grains would i need or should i try Varget or some other powder? I already have some Varget due to my experimenting with 110 gr. Hornady's.
But then maybe i should just continue buying Greek surplus until it runs out then reload the thousands of cases i would have accumulated.

I am looking to use this on paper targets, (and yotes?), not deer, my Hornady 165's are good to go for that.

Greek HXP is accurate stuff to feed my M700. Makes me one happy camper.

There is just no way to anwser that question , you would need to know the FPS of the Greek rounds and then check the manuals to find a load close to what you have .

If the Greek ammo is working and the price is what you can live with thats what I would stick with .

First thing you need to do as stated above is chrono a few rounds to acquire a baseline.  With the ammo you're asking about, I've a feeling you may be quite shocked with the velocity you're actually getting.  They just ain't that quick.  The other thing to consider is that even if you're getting great accuracy with original ammo, when you try pulled bullets things are going to change a bit due to deformation of the slugs.  Even if they are resized they never perform quite the same.  Granted that pulled slugs are a great way to go for cheap blaster ammo for an auto or semiauto, but don't hold your breath waiting to match original accuracy in a bolt gun.

I don't own a chronograph but that is on my wish list along with a spotting scope.
My wife is starting to get upset with my new reloading hobby costs. Mostly what pushed her over the edge is my stocking up on components. She thinks 1500 pieces of once fired brass, 2000 -165 gr bullets and 800 rounds of surplus ammo is enough.
I just got this itching to order more surplus  :)

You just need to explain to her how much money you're actually saving by buying in volume.  When you order powder for example there is a $20 surcharge for up to 48# so it is much cheaper to order 48# at a time.  In some cases some guys are waiving the surcharge on a volume order.  Bullets are normally a major expense but get real reasonable when purchased 6 to 10,000 at a time.

Remmy you just need to set her down and explain it to her.  Believe me she will understand! ;D  May want to add a flak jacket to that shopping list also.  ::)

quite simple really......with men it's guns and bullets......with women it's makeup and shoes.

As this ammo is designed for the M-1 Garand I believe you will find that it is not loaded hot.   It will more than likely give a couple hundred feet less than equivalent weight bullet in commerical ammo.
At least that is what I found in my M-1.

The Army spec from TM 43-0001-27 (1994) for M2 Ball is 50 gr of IMR 4895 which is rated at 50k psi and 2740 fps at 78ft from the muzzle.  Bullet should be 152 gr flat base.  Hodgdon has data for IMR 4895 which would indicate that this is a reasonable load but their data is for boattails in the 150 and 155 gr weights. Standard reloading disclaimers apply to working a load in your personal rifle with different components.  Best, Brian

blpenn "Army spec from TM 43-0001-27 (1994) for M2 Ball is 50 gr of IMR 4895 "

Thanks i will get me some IMR 4895 and either some bullets from Honrady or maybe some pulled FMJ and start from there.

I know its not loaded so hot but if it gets me a tight group within a few hundred yards its good to go plinking ammo.

I like boattails beside stabilizing when reaching out its easier to seat on the case when reloading.

Here's a place for both powder and bullets.  Spec may be for IMR 4895 but understand there are major variations in this powder from lot to lot.  The 4895 from this site, although bulky may work very well for you if you're an experienced loader, but don't just throw in 50 grains and squeeze the trigger.  Deffinetely start low work up.  With components from this site you can duplicate the load you're looking for if you're careful.
