Oxygen requirements for cartridges
« on: August 31, 2008, 08:03:51 AM »
Ever wonder how the powder can burn ie. how there can be enough oxygen present in the case like in a compressed load?

 ???
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

From what I understand, the gunpowder produces it's own flammable gasses and does not need extra oxygen.

I'm told that the powder has all the oxygen required to burn already in it.

The powder is formulated to have both the fuel and oxidizer in it.

I've heard the the same things guys, but to go a step farther, if this is true then a conventional firearm should discharge in space.  Will it?  I know they will fire under water.

I don't see why they wouldn't.  Though you would have to take care that the radiation from the sun did not heat your ammunition and cause it to cook off.

Yes in outer space or under water matters not. Out in space ya could use it to propell you also just make sure you want to go backward before you fire it. No gravity out there ya know.

Yes, it will fire in space. The powder contains the fuel and the oxygen to burn it. One more neat thing about shooting it in space. Muzzle velocity is the same as terminal velocity, even if the target is a gazillion light years away! It would, however, be nice and quiet. Only a bit of noise in space. There would be noise in the cloud of gas emitted from the gun, but nowhere else.

That means if you fired a bullet in space and it's path intersected the orbit of a planet, it would strike at muzzle velocity if no other force interfered. Further meaning the bullet could possibly hit the robotic rover on Mars several months later and destroy it.

Kinda brings more meaning to "not shooting into the air".

Mars atmosphere who probably slow the bullet, but the theory would work on the moon or on a satellite.

Gunpowder is much like solid rocket fuel in that it contains it's own oxygen

Actually, if in orbit when fired the bullet would have infinite bullet drop, it would always be falling towards the earth.  Eventually it would re-enter, but depending on many factors that could take many years to happen.  That's REALLY long range shooting.

Sounds like a test for the next lunar landing. Forget hitting a golf ball, send up a 45-70.

While space may be a vacum it is not a perfect one. There are many other factors that could and would effect a bullets path. Gravitational pull from planets or from the galaxy itself are just a couple.
Just another worthless opinion!!
