Squirrels, deer, Ticks and Chiggers
« on: August 31, 2008, 09:29:34 AM »
Went on a combo Squirrel Hunt/Deer Scouting trip early this morning.
Bagged one bushytail, but he fell in a bunch of briars so thick I couldn't get to him. Hate that,  I despise wasting game.
Saw three does w/fawns still with their spots. Found a couple good mast trees and a HUGE trail from a bedding area to a corn field.
I'm gonna miss Muzzleloader opening because I will be in East Tn hog hunting, and I am sure somebody else will find the same things I did, but at least I know where there are deer right now.

p.s. About the ticks and chiggers; Pulled 12 big dog ticks off of me when I got home and took a shower. Guarantee I will have a blue zillion chiggers burrowed into my most delicate parts come tomorrow.

Alan check out "permethrin" for the bug problem. Where are you going hog hunting?

Got drawn for two hunts on Catoosa; The November 13-15 Muzzleloader Hunt and the December 4-6 gun Hunt.
Both are Deer/Boar.
I dern near took a shower in Deet before I went in the woods, but I believe I could walk down the middle of a 12 lane hiway and still get ticks on me.
No chiggers have shown up yet today, so maybe it helped with them.

The Permethrin will kill them on contact. Good luck on the hunts.

Me & 6 year old son went out this morning on Hiwassee Island to get some geese. No luck as we got there late & all the best spots were taken. We spent rest of morning deer scouting as he drew the HI youth deer hunt on Sept 13 & 14. Yes two weeks from now. He is excited & I will be looking for snakes all weekend long. Maybe we will get an early cold snap.

Permethrin is great stuff. Put it on your clothes and let it dry. It will last through several washings. I always add a little more to my legs when I start in the woods. I use it during spring Turkey and early fall hunting and scouting. Ticks and chiggers are crazy bad this year. I used deet and permethrin while picking blackberries this year and I still found several ticks on me. I only got a couple chiggers though.

I made the mistake of heading into the woods without any bug juice last year during bow season. I must have gotten 100 chigger bites.
