rem 700 sps v .308 project
« on: August 31, 2008, 01:54:24 PM »
I have been wanting a remington 700 sps v in .308 for a while but i have been thinking of some stuff i want to do to it to make it a little more of a personal fit. first i want to have the barrel cut to 22" instead of 26 so it is a little more meneuverable. next i will put an hs precision stock on it. and then i think it will look really great with a duracoat job that i do myself. i would like to know what anyone thinks about this combination. i have a falcon 10x42 scope that i will put on it also. any comments would be appreciated. thanks

What the heck ya planning on doing with it once it's done? What's its mission in life?

I guess I've never understood the fascination with varmint weight rifles in .308 really. The .308 is definitely not a varmint round in any sense of how I consider varmints. Why a person would want all that extra weight for a hunting rifle for big game I have never quite grasped.

If I wanted a shorter 20" or 22" barrel .308 I'd just buy one of that length in a sporter or lighter weight configuration and be done with it. The Model Seven comes with a 20" barrel and the standard Model 700s come with 22". For me at least they make more sense than having a varmint weight barrel and cutting it back. If hunting is the use then why do you feel the need for the heavy barrel and if target use is the primary purpose why do you feel the need to shorten it?

Help us understand your intended use of it.

Someday GB will understand that some of us aren't normal and like to tote heavy, fat barelled rifles around  :D

Seriously, I too would like to know the intended purpose. By the time you chop the barrel and get the HS stock, you're looking at it costing even more than a off the shelf Rem 700 LTR which is essentially what you want the SPS V to be in the end.

I think the black rifle 308 people feel like snipers or something.  It is certainly an image thing.  They even have their own wardrobe for the range.

It goes beyond what a simple hunter can comprehend.  It sells guns, however.  I'm surprised they haven't asked for a forum.

Sounds kinda Zumbo like!

Ever heard of Tactical shoots? Ever heard of F Class competition? Ever heard of volume shooting in general?
Heavy barrel beats the pants off a lightie in those endeavers & the rifles don't know what you are wearing.
I have both a light 308 & a heavy 308 in my safe right now & they both have their purpose. As far as a forum
is concerned, people who volume shoot are already aware that several such forums already exist.

If you want a lightie, why should anyone get upset or even care? Same with the heavy.

Oh, about the question. Sniper (evil name  ;D) makes a good point in that it may not make alot of sense to buy
an SPS & then spend that much when you could buy a LTR. Another thing you can do is watch for a used 308 & then buy the components. I found a used VS, maybe you could as well. The VS has a 26" tube, but cutting the tube doesn't cost much.

the bear, you might look at the SPS Tactical. You would not really give up hardly anything in the way of
vel with the modest 308 case going from 22 to 20. This would be an economical way to get where you want to go. The VTR is yet another, though not my favorite, some like it.

For velocity vs barrel length & other 308 stuff, look here:   http://www.6mmbr.com/308win.html

Watch it though, these are black/dark rifle guys though I am not sure about their clothes, I'm not into that!
