SHARIKI & early .44 oversized bores....

QUESTION,
  I have a old H&R 155 Shikari coming and am wondering if its likely it will have the over-sized .430 + bore.

 I posted up inside another thread, but fear it got missed/lost in the read.

Not a big deal as over-sized lead bullets are available and work very well.

Ok here I have to hang out my ignorance about a caliber hat.  I normally wouldn't interrupt a perfectly legitimate question but you have my curiosity up buddy.  What is a 155 Shikari?

nice lookin gun ya have their buddy, and I would willingly give ya a 50 cent piece for that rack.  (Would give 2 50 cent pieces if I could find a live buck during season with a rack that nice this year)

sooooo its a muzzleloader?  Am I seeing this correctactely?

I asked the same question about older .44magnums, and Quick said Shikaris were made by the old H&R and are not oversize.- Pete

Not exactly, they were breechloaders in .44 mag and .45/70 but for whatever reason they had a brass ramrod under the barrel, mine is a 28" barrel in 45/70.

That's right they made them in .45-70, 44 Mag and .58 muzzle loader!!  Guess the ram rod is form looks only.

 GOOD news on the bore, I didn't know it was just the NEF barrels so afflicted.

 Couple years back I was working up loads for a buddie for his 444 and 44mag and I discovered the 270Speer GD bullet. I REALLY like its performance!! He had shot a couple deer two bear as well as a Moose with it now. All thru and thru shots, some major bones hit and all game recovered with in very short distances. Always good expansion even on the little whitetails. SO, I checked the bullet stock and I had only a couple pieces. Midway fixed that right quick!!

 That pic is one that was provided from the seller. That is the one and only deer he shot with the gun. Notice the brass on a string hanging between the bases. I'll post up some proper shots once I actually get it in my hands.

On my 45/70 Shikari that is a cleaning rod under the barrel. Sorry I let that one go 20 years ago.

Check the bore and you'll notice that it has REAL rifling, too! And NO transfer bar!

Congrats CW! I've had my eye on a 45-70 Shirkari at my local shop, but they have a price tag of $199 on it, I could get it for less, but it's not in the best shape, certainly not as nice as your M155, so I've been ignoring it as much as I can...... But it does have the original ramrod, so I may have to make him an offer on it just so I can have it, I haven't even picked it up for fear of falling in love with it, it's probably got a pristine bore!!   ::) ;)

Well today was almost a wash out weatherwise.. so down to the gun room I went. I started tinkering....

Swapped some stocks around and came up a winner!!

I had bought a set of Orange straight lams a year or so back and didnt really have a use for them, but I liked them so I grabbed them up. Well.... they now live on the Shariki!!!  ;D I also took off those aweful Williams folding rear site and cobbled up looking front post. Swapped in a nice Buck horn rear and a Brass beaded Lyman front site.






 I didn't do anything for the ramrod. just put it away with the factory stocks for posterity.  I havent loaded or shot it yet.

Mine is .45-70/1972 & the bore is as *precisely* .450 x .458 as I can measure.

I've shot over 100 500gr cast @ 1650fps+, along with a couple or three hundred lighter loads w/no detectable change in headspace.

I believe it'll handle heavier loads then my shoulder will!  ;D

I'd be very cautious of shooting anything more than trapdoor loads in an old H&R, unlike modern SB2 frames that are heat treated investment cast alloy, the Shikari and all pre '87 frames were ductile iron, that's cast iron to us laymen, when it breaks it will be catastrophic, there likely won't be any warning signs that you're looking for due to it's brittle nature. I'm not sure, but I believe the underlugs were silver soldered on also as opposed to welded on for those made later.
