243 accuracy ?

After being totally surprised and pleased with my first handi in 22 hornet. I am thinking I want one in 243 now. I am just wondering about its accurracy. Does it just take more tinkering to get them to shoot or is there indeed a problem with them?

My personal opinion is the black eye conserning this caliber in the hamdi came form the introduction of the super-lites. They can be a bit of a problem. A couple guys on here have gotten them to shoot well enough.

On a personal note, I have an Ultra Varmint 243 and its shoots great, one inch all day long, better where I to "fiddle" with it.

The 20" Superlight barrel is very finicky, the light contour heats up very fast , but even it can be made to shoot well, I have four 243 H&Rs, two 20" Superlights and two 24" Ultras, if I thought they were inaccurate, I surely wouldn't have bought more of em. If you're shooting handloads in a Superlight, you won't have any problems, but factory ammo may be a bit harder, factory ammo in the standard 22" and the 24" bull barrels will work fine, just a matter of finding the load it likes as it is with most guns. Any Handi may take some tinkering, some shoot fine right out of the box, some don't, for those that don't, everything you need to get it shooting good can be found in the FAQs and Help sticky.

I got a 243 barrel and it shoots great. I really want it to shoot 58 gr pills for varmint shooting but have not found the 'right' load as yet. Unless someone here has a suggestion? I don't shoot deer with rifles so I don't really want to go the 100 grain route. I just loaded up a bunch of 75gr v-max and am getting an inch group.
 I don't think you can go wrong with the 243. In fact I just bought a Remington in 243. That makes two.
I have a 22 hornet nef barrel as well and broke it in on a crow the first weekend....awesome! Fun to watch impact thru the scope.

I also have a .243 Win. H&R Ultra 24" fluted bull with Choate stock that I am pleased with now. At first I was very frustrated with this rifle until I started to try some of the tips given in the FAQ section. Now it is a descent shooter (~0.9 to 1.25" @ 100 yrds), but with more time, tinkering, and load testing I hope to make it even better. The biggest improvements so far were from a trigger job, polishing the bore with Flitz, shooting 60+ rounds before even trying to see how it would group, learning to keep oil off the latch shelf, and to Full Length Resize only. In my rifle, Neck Resizing usually results in a pop open.

MOGLEY, I feel your pain. I have been trying to develop a load for the Nosler 55gr BT. I started with IMR 4895 because I had it already, but abandoned it for a powder with a better fill rate. I have seen H-380 and H-414 recommended often, but neither are offered in my local store. I have been experimenting with H-4350, but it seems too slow for such a light bullet. I suppose Varget will be my next powder to experiment with. Good luck.
