Buffalo Classic and Leverevolution.
« on: September 01, 2008, 03:06:42 PM »
I've been reading this forum for some time and I decided to get a Buffalo Classic in 45-70.  I picked it up last week and I also purchased a box of Leverevolution until I could get a bullet mold, some cases, and dies for it.  I was intending to take my chronograph with me so that I could provide some data for this group on this ammo and the 32" barrel.  Unfortunately, in the excitement of shooting the new rifle I forgot to bring the chrono.

The first shot at 50yds. was in the black and three rounds later I was hitting the ten ring.  Time to move the target to 100yds.  It was shooting a little low and I adjusted the rear sight to hit the target 3" high.  So far all of the groups were better than what I expected, about 2" with the factory iron sights and my poor eye sight.  I moved the target to 150yds and changed the front sight insert to the smallest circle.  The next three shots all landed in the 9 ring with two shots touching and the third 2" to the left.  At this point the rear sight was up as far as it could go.  After moving the target out to 200yds. I then shot the rest of the box of Leverevolution.  All of these shots grouped at about 5 o'clock and down 5" in a 6" group.  Sorry I don't have any pictures, I was having too much fun to remember.

The trigger pull was about 9lbs and rough. This will have to be the first thing I do.  Thank you to who ever wrote the instruction on how to do this in the FAQ.  The second is to change the rear sight to something that has finer adjustments.  Perhaps a Williams or some other sight.  I've read a lot of complains about the recoil and I was expecting something like a mule.  I've been looking at lace on recoil pads and I have found several that I like.  After shooting the rifle I found that it was a joy to shoot from the bench and I won't be getting any pad for it.

I thought it came with a Williams.  Do you mean a different Williams?

Thanks for the report Joe, good shooting! ;)

Chas, Williams makes lots of sights, three peep sights specifically for H&Rs including the BC, the WGRS that comes on the BC, the FP and the FP-TK, all can be seen in the FAQs topic Peep and Firesights. There are several other sights discussed in the long range sights link in the FAQs.

I get excellent accuracy with the Leverevolutions in my Handi .45-70.  I'm glad we've got the short case reloading problem pretty well solved, because I really don't want to give them up.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Chas, Williams makes lots of sights...

I know that.

I was just curious about whether some BC's come without Williams sights or whether Joe had a particular different Williams sight in mind.

I honed in on this because I just bought a BC also and am interested in sight selection of others.

Mine came with the standard Williams slide adjustable sight for elevation and a dovetail for windage.  I've been looking around and I see that Williams has one for the BC that has a screw adjustment for elevation and windage.  According to some reports, this one will take it out to 500-600yds.  Unless I see something better and affordable, this is the one I will be getting.  Here's one that Midway sells.  http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=165204&t=11082005

The ramped sight that comes on the BC is the WGRS, it's an ok hunting sight, but adjustments are somewhat crude, with a .404" tall front sight which is considerably lower than the .494" or .584" 17A sight that comes on the BC, you can get past 300yds, but the FP sights are good for 600yds+ even with 500gr bullets at 1500-1600fps.

The Midway link is the FP, do yourself a favor and get the FP-TK, it has Target Knobs for adjusting and Williams has knobbed set screws to do away with the need for a screwdriver to loosen the elevation lock screw that both FP sights need.

Great advice quickdtoo, I'll do that.  I've seen someone else on this forum, maybe you, mention the shorter front.  I'll get that too.
