Home made cast bullets

Anyone use home made cast bullets with sabots in their in lines? I have tried this with 330 grain 458 cal. Good accuracy at 50 yards. Have not tried it at 100 yet.

I cast up some 292 gr lead  ( 458 for 45-70 ) and got clover leaf at 50 yds,  (savage 700MLSS, 209 w/39 gr 5744 ) than I went to a 405 HB 2 to 3" group at 120 yards. I am satisfied. Today I cast a few 520 gr and cant wait to get back to the range. I cant find a load for the 520 so I'll start with 32 gr 5744.

Thanks for the reply Dan. Sounds like good results for you. I have also been using 5744 with good results in my Savage. I need more range time. Been using MMP sabots for the 458 slugs. Cant wait to get a deer in my sights.

I have been casting my own, I cast for 45-70 and when I bough the savage last year and found that I can get sabots for a 457 bullet. So I cast a bunch of 300, 320, 340, and 405 from soft lead. I did manage to retrive a coupla of them and they were wider than they were long.
  I cronyed the 405's at 1880 FPS . I used 39 gr of 5744 for all these loads.
 Tomorrow I will post my results with a 500 gr bullet.  Dan

 OK, I went to the range today to try some 458, 520 gr bullets with MMP orange sabots.   At 125 yards, my worst group was 2 1/4 ". I used 39 gr of 5744. I was a little concerend with recoil so I started with 34 gr and worked my way up to 39 . I am very satisified with this load. I did forget to take the crony . Dan

Great results Dan. What type of lead are you using. I have been using 100% wheel weights and have been considering pure lead, for expanding purposes.

i vote pure lead for the speeds shot out of any ML, even da smokeless smokepoles

I use pure lead, I have a small selection of molds for my 45-70 and I use w/w, for
the savage I went to pure lead because I like the expansion. I did recover some 405's and one 520, the 405 was quite wide, the 520 is the size of a 50 cent coin
 and weighed 505 gr. Now, these were shot with a dirt back stop. I can't wait till muzzle loader season. Dan
