Wood pigeons
« on: September 03, 2008, 03:23:06 AM »
Hi,
I am posting from Ireland and my question is about shooting Woodpigeons. I have never seen any posts regarding these birds. Are they shot in the States or Canada? Here and all of the UK they provide the basic sport for most all-year shooters. They are classed as vermin because of the way they attack the crops. We mostly decoy them into stubble and the like. While on holiday in Italy I did not see a single pigeon even though there was lots to eat in the fields. Are they on your list of quarry?

Can't really say that I know what a wood pigeon is. We have mornring doves, white wing doves and rock pigeons over here. Rock pigeons are just the common pigeon seen on the streets of cities. They are not generally shot as a game bird but as a pest in places where legal. The doves are shot as game birds in most states but are protected as sond birds in a few states.

In California I hunt bandtail pigeons.  Lots of fun, I use either a double barrel or pump 12 gauge shotgun.
