Ruger Black Hawk 44 Mag 4 5/8

Can some one tell he how shooting a BH in 44 Mag is a 4 5/8 barrel.  I may be able to pick one up.  I have a Vaquero 7 5/8 but the sights for my aging eyes are pretty tough.  I love it and it has only about 12 rounds through it and I want to sell it.

Recoil wise or accuracy wise?
If you are selling the Vaquero is it because your eye's pick up the Partridge style sights of the BH better?

Some find the shorter barrel more difficult to line up due to a shorter sight radious but I personally cant really tell any difference and shoot a 4" as well as I do a 7-1/2"
I am going to call the recoil nominal for that caliber unless you would reload them hot with the heavier bullets or purchase the likes of the corbon ammo.

 It is mostly a recoil question.  Yes, I have a tough time with sights.  A couple of years ago, my eyes tolerated the lower sights alot better.
I also plan to carry the piece camping and hunting and the shorter barrel seems a whole lot handier.  I love the Vaquero's but times change.  :-\

I have one and its a joy to shoot and to carry. It will shoot one inch groups at 25 yards and although i many be a little more recoil tolerant then some here i think its a joy to shoot even with 300 grain loads. 250s are a walk in the park. I like it so much that I havent been able to shoot much in the last year and today i went to my buddys and did some shooting. Now i have a pretty good collection of custom sixguns in about any caliber, but what did i bring? My trusty 4 5/8s super.

My short Super (with the Dragoon gripframe) has never been a problem handling recoil, while a friend's short Blackhawk with standard (XR3 red) grip can become somewhat irritating to most who try it.

As eyes age and their muscles loose elasticity, a short sight radius is easier to handle.  Now that I think about it, I haven't carried a barrel over 5.5 inches in a good many years.  At least these are my experiences.

Thanks.  I went ahead and put the money up for it.  I have a bunch of 44 special rounds as well which will make it more fun to plink with.

I just answered my own concern.  I picked the 45/8 SBH up and ran some 240 SPs through her and some 220 HPs as well.  Not bad at all!  In fact what a hoot.  The gut is sighted in for about 59 yards so I was shooting high but tight.  Hell, when I ran some 44 special cowboy loads through it, it felt like a Single Six. ;D

Funny you should mention Lloyd.  I was thinking about selling the Paraord Warthog 45acp in favor of just carrying the 44.  Heck, I live in Twin Falls Idaho.  While I have a concealed carry card, I don't "carry".  I keep a gun in the car but that is it.  Twin Falls, Idaho is not exactly a hot bed of gang violence or home invasion robberies.  I live 15 miles outside of town anyway in a little community.  I don't need money tied up in the Paraord.  Hell, I forgot that I even had it until just now!

ive carried mine alot in a pancake holster and found it no harder then a full sized 1911 to conseal.

Hi,Shooting 44 magnum rounds through your 4-5/8" Ruger is no problem, that's depending on how many your planning on shooting,I usually go through about 20-30 rounds are so before I switch over to .44 Special rounds,the .44Special rounds take a less toll on my hand and wrist,sometimes i'll only fire 12 rounds through before I switch over,the 44 Special seems to be more accurate too around 25 yards the Ruger can handle the Magnum rounds all day long,It's a great revolver,and very well made. when are you going to post your Vaquero,I might be interested. copshop78@yahoo.com

I put the Hogue grip on my 4 5/8" SBH and it tames right down.  I have some mild and hot 44 mag loads that I shoot in it.  Not a problem with recoil and this is my carry gun when out on the quad or in hunting camp.  I picked up some 44 special brass to load up some lighter loads.  Not necessarily for me, but I would like to get my wife and daughters used to shooting it with some special loads, then work up to my mild Mag loads and up from there.  I think it would be a lot more beneficial to have them comfortable in grabbing the 44 in elk camp rather than a cell phone that has no signal.  Especially if they are in camp alone.

Try the Hogue grip.  I have one on most of my revolvers.  All of the 4 5/8" models, even the .22.

 Thanks for the tip on the grip.
You know, you can make a 44 special pretty hot. while it won't hold the powder of the Mag, it will do alot more than the low power cowboy loads most factory rounds are. 
Elmer Kieth, prior to his involvement with the developement of the 44 Mag, he had some loads that approached magnum level power and performance.

personaly i detest rubber grips on a single action. There but ugly and in my opinion not needed on a gun like a 44 mag that only has moderate recoil to start with. This is only my opinion and i know alot of guys like them. but no condom grips on my single actions!!

If I was shooting cowboy action, collecting Colts, or having a custom high dollar gun made, I would agree with you.  Unfortunately my guns are used for personal safety and hunting.  Not that you can't use the previously listed for same, you can.  I don't shoot my guns at 25 yards for groups.  I shoot my guns at 25 yards to get the sights on paper.  From then on, my groups are at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards or meters.  At these longer distances I want the best opportunity for accuracy.  For me, this is having best grip, sights, trigger, and ammo available.  I do have some guns with nice wood grips, but they rarely get the call on a trip to the range or afield.

I appreciate your valuable opinion as always.

If they offered this gun with a fluted cylinder, I'd already own one but, allas they do not with the 4 5/8" barrel stainless guns.

 I will tell you that now that I have shot my Ruger a bunch, it is my favorite hg of all time. I can shoot it will full power loads, 44 specials or everything in between and it is super accurate and comfortable to boot. I think that not fighting the recoil is the key.  Like the 416 Rigby that I used to have, you have to sort of roll with it.

As far as carrying it, I have a nylon high rise holster that makes it concealable enough for everyday carry.

Sounds like you have discovered our little secret, that 4 5/8" barrel 44 are sweet!  I have a 5" that has an aluminum grip frame on it to lighten it a little and I had a gunsmith friend fit a fluted cylinder to it.  I love that gun!  Of course the fact that Mag-na-port polished it up nice helped also.  Enjoy that new gun!  44 Man

I bought a new Super Blackhawk with the 5 1/2 bbl.- picked up a .45 Bisley at a gunshow and swapped the frame, trigger and hammer to the .44 and now it's become my favorite carry gun.  Sold the .45 with the long barrel to help defray the cost of the project. I load .44 spl ;D loads in magnum cases so it doesn't get the ring in the cylinder from the shorter spcl cases.

tobie. don't be afraid of the magnum loads, their not all that bad as people say they are. You can always go to Pachmayr's to tame the recoil.

The 4 5/8" 44 Mag is one of my favorite packing guns as well. Light on the hip, plenty of power and easy to shoot well.

Boxhead, That is a very nice example of a packing gun and not to be hijackin the thread But could I ask how did you come by the packin barrel on a 3screw flattop?

I picked the gun up off of the Ruger Forum 4 or 5 years ago.

On recoil, I like it better than my Ruger Super Redhawk (7 1/2"), the grip shape is better for letting her just roll up!  I think its a fine daily carry, which I use the Mernickle Custom Single Action Concealment Holster, here is the article on the Quinn Bro's site...

 heres mine. A project i took on myself. Its  super that i fitted an aluminum grip frame and ejector rod housing to and bead blasted the whole gun so it would match. The grips are white (fake) micartas that our own 44 man scrimshawed a pic of elmer keith on one side and a pic of my chocolate lab whos name happens to be elmer kieth on the other. My neigbor scalloped the recoil sheildand loading gate. My buddy did the action on it. I put a bowen rear and a clements front post sight on it and a sherrifs model belt mountain base pin to get a little more positive extraction. Only hunting ive done with it was last spring i took a 1000 lb cow buffalo with it.

SWEET!!  I guess I am gonna have to pull out my 44 and camera and put in a photo.  Not a lot different than stock, but a little bit.  Lots of nice guns being pictured.  So much can be done from the same platform.  Thanks!!

Hey .44 man,
great minds think alike.  My 5" .44 with the alloy frame and ejector housing, patridge front
and Bowen rear is a joy to carry and to shoot, although with real heavy loads it get's your attention.  Did it all myself including grips snd holster.  Hank08
