rem 770 in 243 wow
« on: September 06, 2008, 05:17:55 AM »
Just purchased a Remington 770 in 243 at a Walmart 337.00 Wanted the 243 in 700 they had for 8 months........ but I am a bit slow. So I said the 770 not knowing much about it. Came home and read a lot of not so nice things about it. I think this may have been a mistake.
Well I took it to the range and shot some reloads with it specifically 75 gr v-max with 38 grains of 4895.
First shot was 7 inches high and 2 to the right. adjusted the scope ( bushnell that came with it).
cleaned barrel
Next shot 1 inch low and 2 in right.
third shot center but 1inch low
cleaned barrel
4,5,6and 7 shot ........... all inside a 3/4" with 3 bullet holes touching and the fourth enough away so I can't honestly it was
cleaned barrel
next 4 same 3/4 inch group
WOW!!!!! I am excited. This may not have a smooth action like the 700 but I have to tell ya this is some kinda nice rifle.
I shot it again a couple of days later with 37.8 grains of 4895 and it shot a 1/2" group. I don't think I can shoot any better than that. Most of my load work ups have been around NEF rifles and the time and material I have invested to get each one ironed out has been considerable. By comparison this makes me a believer in getting what you pay for.
All the reviews I have read have all one thing common in the thread and that is these guns do shoot. Add me to the list of testimonials!!

I wish they'd chamber the 770 in .223.  I love the API camo model.

Just goes to show ya.....

A set-up at any price in the right hands will get the job done.  A high priced rig in the hands of a Doofus doesn't make a Doofus any better.

There is nothing wrong with the lower end rifles and the way they shoot.  It all comes down to the shooters ability and the understanding of the process.

While there are some features inherent in the 770 that I don't care for, that doesn't mean the 770 won't put meat on the table when the right guy picks it up.  Doesn't the 770 have a 'pressed' barrel?

I've said this before, I have a friend that thinks a Savage 110 .30-06 Package Gun is the best thing in the world.  I wouldn't even consider a 110 Package Gun, but it is all he needs and he is good with it.

In 10 years or more he almost went thru a whole box of shells already.
