SS SPS Varmit in 204?
« on: September 06, 2008, 01:15:51 PM »
I was browsing the shelves at a shop today when I found what looked like a sps Varmit but it was Stainless. It looked very lightly used so I grabbed it. I have looked on Remington's site and I see no mention of a 204 varmit sps in stainless. Any ideas?

You are right. They do not list them period anywhere. I know this because I am a big fan of the SPS Varmint. If they made it I would know. It could be a special run like the 7MM-08 Varmint that is also not listed anywhere but Gun Broker has a few. I think it is Kensel that owns one of those sweet things. I hope to own one myself soon. Let us know how it shoots. OHHHHH one other question. Does it have the 26" Varmint barrel? Also does it have the Beaver tail stock with the two front sling swivel studs and the three slots in it? Thanks for the response Dale. It does have a 26 inch heavy Barrel. It also has the dual studs on a sps 3 slot stock. I will see if I can post a picture later. I had a 6.5x20  Ziess with tacticle turrets that I had planned to put on another rifle so I mounted it on this one instead. Unfortunatly, due to dammage from Gustav and Ike heading our way, none of the ranges are open this weekend. If we have to evacuate for Ike, we will be heading back to the deer camp so I will get a report then for sure.

on a side note, has anyone shot 204 Ammo made by HSM. I have never seen it before but they sell in 50 packs so, I was just wondering. At the least, i was thinking cheap brass.

What you may have there is a rifle that started it's life as a VLSS Thumbhole. The person that had it before you may have liked the thumbhole stock and changed it out with a SPS Varmint stock before selling it. Just a thought. Dale

They do indeed exist. I got one new at Cabelas. It's of the 22-250 variety.

Box was marked SPS Varmint, 26" barrel.

Was yours Stainless? I have looked at Remingtons site and they list all past and current special runs and they make no mention of a ss sps varmint.

I don't wanna swear to it but it sure seems to me they had the SPS SS Varmint listed as a catalog item at least a year or two then dropped it. That is at least what I "think" I remember. Remington has become almost as bad as S&W once was about a gun of the month club. They add and delete models every year now on a regular basis. They seem to offer a lot of things just one year only not as special or limited editions per se but as regular cataloged items then drop it the next year.

Thanks for the response fellas. I thought that I remembered the same thing as Graybeard but I couldn't find it on their site. Either way, I am pretty happy about what I have, so I consider it a good deal. Now I just need to find that Southern PD colony that Jamaldog was always talking about and I will be all set.

Cabala's sent me a sales ad for Aug 21-27 and a Stainless Varmint SPS is shown chambered in 204, 223 and 22-250 with 24" barrel.

I got my 22-250 at the local Cabela's when that sale was going on. Box is marked 26" and barrel measures 26". I don't believe Remington make an SPS V in a 24" barrel.

There again they must. I have seen a few SPS Varmints listed on Gun Broker with a 24" barrel. Dale

It sounds like we all have custom Remington production rifles. That sure makes them sound important, doesn't it.

Any word on the hsm ammo or the elusive southern PD?

I think I am beginning to realise Remington makes a lot of different configurations of the 700 and do not list many. Dale

After being cooped up in the house for two days while the effects of Ike came through, I was going crazy. Our range decided to open and My Daughter and I jumped on the oppertunity to do some shooting. The wind was gusting to 30 so we were not very serious, more just blowing off steam. I shot several guns, my new 204, beng one. I also shot my 35 whellen, knight 45/70, 22 hornet handi and Savage 7-08. Most shot well enough. My daughter had a blast with the 204 and hornet with the 204 being her favorite. We didnt shoot for groups with the wind but she loves ringing the 8" gong at 200. Even with the wind, she went 20/20 aver an hour period of time. Not too shabby for an 8 year old. I am pretty proud. She had the wind figured out an was very paitent. We shot hornady factory loads and once we dialed it in, it seemed to be pretty consistant, how consistant, I am not sure but I will find out soon.

Congrat's on having some fun! :) It's always nice to get out and blow off some steam. Makes it even better when the young one's are along.

Yea it is nice to have the kids along. There was one time though my daughter and I were at the range for about an hour. All of a sudden she had to go pee. I tried my best to talk her into going over behind the tree. We were the only ones there but she wanted no part of going outdoors. I was a little upset then because we had to pack everything up to drive 2 miles home for her to go. Dale

Yes, that's a .204 SPS Varmint Stainless. Probably a Cabela's special; I have one in .22-250 with a dull-finish 26" bbl. Dick's sells one with an O.D. green stock/blue barrel but not sure in .204. There is/was a 700 SPS with a "standard" synthetic stock and 24" barrel: budsgunshop.com had some in .204 cal.
