For you levergun afficianados, here are some pics of my african plains game, taken in Limpopo province of RSA, in July. I used my .45-70 guide gun, and hand loaded 300 gr. nosler partition bullets. Hope you enjoy.

The only noslers I have ever recovered. 3 from a zebra[that's another story], and 1 from the kudu.

Matt: Dunno about the horse/zebra relationship, however the locals eat elephant so I would think it is a safe bet that the zebra meat is not being wasted

While we didn't eat any in camp, I've been told that zebra steaks on the braii[grill], are excellent. And yes, nothing gets wasted, and they make AWESOME rugs!

WW cases
300 gr. nosler partition
51 gr. H4198
Fed. 210 primers
crimped with Lee factory crimp die

Loads chrono'd between 1950-1975 fps out of the 18 1/2" barrel.

Marlin shows again what a reasonably priced, well made gun can do..don't need one of those fancypants, hard-to-pronounce brands of guns..300 grains in a 45/70 Marlin kills 'em just as dead...

I gotta ask... what's the story with the zebra needing 3 shots?

Also, how did the 45/70 do with the other animals? Drop any of them in their tracks?

bigdave, the reason the zebra took multiple hits was because of my 1st shot placement. I hit it in the chest, but didn't allow for the angle[it was facing me]. I clipped only 1 lung. For the next 1 1/2 hrs. it was a footrace thru the brush. I finally got a chance to uncork the guide gun on her, running. Net result, 2 hits, 1 miss, and 2 murdered african trees

5 of the animals were bang/flops, DRT. Impala,blue wildebeast, kudu, warthog, and gemsbok dropped on the spot, 1 shot kills.

Here is a pic of all our trophies, except the zebra skins. We took 30 plains game animals in 10 days of hunting, and half were shot with Marlin leverguns.

Nice post Mad Dog,

My standard hunting load in the 45-70 is 300 grain bullet and 50.0 grains of IMR 4198 for 2096 fps in my 20 inch bbl Ruger No. 1.

I noticed the typical Partition bullet performance - front core gone, jacket folded back. I seat my bullets with the cannelure in front of the case mouth for minimum bullet jump and do not crimp for the single shot.

Looks like you did some nice shooting.

I had Zebra at Carnivores (well known restaurant) in Kenya along with a lot of other "bush meat" and I must say Zebra was fantastic eating.

I've read all of Robert Ruark's work, and they always shot zebra for lion bait and the natives. I suspect the natives knew what was good and didn't complain! I think, back in the deep recesses of a feeble old brain I read somewhere that horses and zebras were not related. Someone, If I'm wrong, please correct me. Just now, the zebra population is pretty low on my place so I can't try it out.

All of the meat we ate over there, was really delicious, and very mild flavored. My two favorites were kudu bratts and blue wildebeast enchiladas with pineapple and chipole sauce. YUM!!

My shots were from 35 to 110 yds. Avg. probably 70-90 yds. That was the primary reason I wanted to hunt the limpopo. Very thick brush, you would have to work to get 200 yd.+ shots.

Montanan, my actual longest shot with the noslers, wasn't in africa, it was a hog in Texas, in 2006, at a measured 185 yds. 1 shot DRT.
