Got my warthog!
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:46:59 AM »
Hi

What a hunt!! We went from winter to summer no spring. It was hot, very hot but I loved every moment. I hunted from Thursday to yesterday. The grass was dry which made the stalking more difficult.
Thursday I took shot at a very nice Impala. We were slowly walking on some spoor. The tracker suddenly stopped and I nearly bumped into him. The impala were standing about 80 meters away, feeding under a couple thorn trees. We slowly set up the shooting sticks. I took aim at a good ram, but had to wait because there was another one behind him. It gave me some time to calm down. After a couple of seconds the front one gave a couple of steps and was clear. I put the cross just behind the shoulder and half way up the chest. At the shot it gave an enormous jump. I could not believe my eyes. I was sure of the shot. After making sure there is no blood anywhere we checked the spot again where he stood, about 5 meters in front of him was a thin branch hanging by a piece of bark. About 10 inches to his front I found the hole in a tree trunk. ::)
Friday afternoon I shot me warthog  ;D
It was about 3:30. We started walking at 2. I just said to the tracker it is dead. Too hot, no birds singing, nothing, when I saw movement between some bushes. It was a warthog walking from our right to our left. I asked the tracker how big the warthog was because I couldn't see any tusks. He said big but with the sticks. Ready to shoot. As the warthog walked into a clearing the tracker gave a soft whistle. He stopped and I shot him on the last rib on left hand side. I cut the bullet out under the skin on the right hand shoulder. He ran about 25 meters before going down. When we got closer we saw the left hand tusk broke off years ago and that is why we couldn’t see anything.
I used 155gr Lapua Mega bullets at 2460fps. Perfect performance - no blood shot meat.

Cheers
Sweet

In my limited knowledge of Lapua products, was that a match type bullet?

Hi - no, it is the Mega, which according to Lapua is built for big game. There was not cup core
separation and good weight retention. I think I might just stick to this bullet for all my hunting.

(I will put up a picture and the weight later on)

Hi

The bullet retained 78% (122gr of 155gr)

This is the entry hole, I couldn't believe the lack of any meat damage!

Hi Sweet 6.5,

The Mega has a good reputation for retaining weight yet transferring energy to the quarry. Pity they're not so easily obtainable round here  ::) cannot recall seeign them on my local shops shelves but seeign as they stock Lapua brass perhaps I have not looked in the right place.

So, how is hartwog as tablefare?  What is the preferred cooking method?

When I visited SA in 1984 we went to several game parks and did lots of game watching.  My children pointed out that hartwogs, as they called them, come in two flavors (colors):  plain and barbeque.  Or to my eyes gray and red.

When I showed your pics to my wife the other night she said, "They are ugly, aren't they?"  ;)

;D They are ugly but they are fun to watch.

To eat an old boar like this you need two bottles of wine. Use half a bottle
of wine to marinate the meat, only start your meal once you have finished
the first bottle. Use the second half of the second bottle to get the meat down.
Only joking but you need to spend more time to marinade and longer cooking time
to make the best of the meat.

Younger ones make good roasts, you can smoke the ribs and make good
smoked sausage.

I'll bring the KWV (or do you prefer Roodeberg?).

When do we eat?  ;D
