adjusting my turk 8mm sights

Well I just got back from firing my turk 8mm.. I can't believe the groups I shot, at 100 yards I had a 3 shot group where they were all just about touching each other. At 170 yards it opened up to about 3-4 inches. I put some orange paint on the front sight which helped a lot. At 100 yards the groups were about 3-4 inches left, and at 170 they were about 7-8 inches left. How can I adjust the sights to bring it in? Vertical was right on with the rear sight set all the way back at 100. The ammo I am using is rem core lokt 170 grain soft point. I have to say, Im so excited about this rifle. I had no idea that this rifle could be so accurate. The bore does look brand new though. Is it possible the barrel is new?

You will have to move the dovetailed front sight to the left slightly.  It doesn't take much to change the point of impact, probably around 0.010 for your rifle depending upon the sight radius.  You can use a brass drift and hammer keeping in mind the slight movement required or better yet, either make or buy a sight adjustment tool to push it into position.

Barrel unused?  Possible if it went through an arsenal refurbishment and then just sat in depot storage.

Better yet install a MOJO sight on it. One of my best shooting rifles is a Turk that I bought for $50. I'll probably put a Huber trigger in it soon.

thanks for the info, I have thought about the peep sight, and I was very accurate with the m-16 in the army, but I wonder if I can be more accurate with the reg sights. I want to shoot as close to the best the rifle can shoot, not just knock down targets.. as for the barrel, I really think it is new, it looks new inside and out. I don't really want a scope on it, but I really want to see what it's capable of. It sure would be nice to take a big Michigan buck at 6oo yards. Yes I know thats not happening, at least not without a scope.. 300 would be great as well.

Ted ol bud, I'll tellya wut!  Before you change the sight, change your ammo.  That Remington stuff bites the - ummm, er, par'n me - it is, shall we say, somewhat underpowered for the caliber.  The American factory loadings of many european calibers are very underpowered in comparison to European loadings at original specifications.  American ammo makers used liability concerns as a basis to load down European calibers in favor of American calibers.  Ammo makers cited the use and prevalence of 'older military actions' as a basis for concern while knowing full well those actions were sound.

Anywho, get some Sellier and Bellot, or some PRVI.  Both come in ball and hunting loads and are pretty inexpensive.  With the S&B you will be shooting an 8mm round as it was originally loaded - a 195-200 gn bullet at 2500'/sec +, not a 170 gn round nose at 2300'/sec; significant difference.  You may not need a sight adjustment with proper ammo; or you may, but at least you're shooting decent loads that are quite capable of taking a big buck out to 300 yds, if you are.................... Thanks Mikey. I will check my local sporting goods store, for the new ammo. If they don't have it i'll order some off the net. I think they will though because they have a lot of mil surplus weapons for sale. I knew the rem ammo was weak, but I wanted to get a round made for hunting, that would mushroom properly. I sure can tell when shooting, that the american stuff is weak, it's almost quiet and sure doesn't kick much either. The ammo I got with it when I first bought the rifle a few years ago was old turk mil surplus. It was very loud and kicked pretty good for such a heavy weapon. As for the sights, Mikey, do you think I should get the peeps?

Ted - peeps are better in the woods because they allow your eyeball to see more of the target and its surroundings.  The peep sight allows you to center your front sight on your target without losing any of the visibility as with the old mil-spec 'V' sights.  If you shot well with the M-16 and its peep sight then you should be able to do well with those sights on yoru Mauser.

If you intend to hunt with that Mauser I would suggest a peep and a different front sight, one with a gold or ivory dot on top of a post, like levergun sights, then all you need to do is cover your target with your front sight and there it goes.......

If you plan first to shoot the rifle to see how well it does you can improve the existing sight set-up fairly easily.  Just about all Mauser front sight blades have the same base measurements - you should be able to replace the front 'inverted 'v' 'sight blade with a nice square front sight blade for a Swedish Mauser - get a set of three for about 10 bucks from SAMCO or SARCO.  Then 'square' the rear 'V'  and you have a much nicer set of 'square' sights that should give you a better sight picture.  HTH.  Mikey.

$39.95 Turk was my first milsurp also back about 7 years ago.
To adjust your front sights a sight adjuster such as the LT-2 works really well for precise adjustments.
