357 max bullet ???
« on: September 07, 2008, 03:25:08 PM »
I have a 14" max barrel and have been shooting the 180xtp bullets with lil gun powder. I ordered some of the remington 180sp for the max to try also. Will these bullets work on deer at the 100 yard range or should I be shooting the hornady ssp bullets. Thanks for any help as I will be using the max to deer hunt with this season

I use a 200 gr cast in my 14" Contender and in my 8" DW with IMR 4227 and have taken deer with both at 100+ yds.  The 14" barrel gives a few hundred fps and a flatter trajectory.  I've consistantly rung the gong at 200yds with the Contender, and would feel confortable shooting a deer at that range.

The 180 Grain SP will do just fine for deer, hog, black bear or whatever at up to 150 yards. I have used both and like the Hornady
180 SSP a little better due to the slightly flatter trajectory, but the Remington will kill anything it hits
in the right place.

Another bullet you may want to consider is the Remington 200 grain round nose designed for the 35 Remington.  This bullet will easily expand at 150 yards from your 14" barrel.  Give Winchester 296 a try.

I have achieved excellent accuracy and velocity with this powder.  In my experiences with the 357 Maximum, accuracy tends to improve if apply a firm crimp to the bullet your shooting.  Helps the burn on the longer powder column.
