Shooting 720 grain bullets in the 45-120!
« on: September 07, 2008, 03:57:03 PM »
Took the 45-120 out for a spin with some real heavyweights today. Unfortunately they weren't stabilized 100%, but they weren't keyholing. At 50 yards they hit below point of aim, but perfect windage, not sure if it was me, but they should be dropping more than the 405 grain bullets I normally shoot at 2550 fps.

Here's the recoil, sorry for the crappy cell phone video. I was shooting at the log that falls off the hay bale after being shot.

http://s64.photobucket.com/albums/h190/tykempster/?action=view&current=268.flv

I had a piece of cardboard on the front, and the hole was slightly oval. Penetrated 20" however, not perfectly straight though. Stopped just short of the end of the log in a knot, and did not stay together at all. I was told these bullets would act like a solid, but I guess 1750ish fps was beyond what they were designed for?

I split the log and dug out all the lead I could find, it left a nice streak in the wood that made it simple to find the bullets. Here is what I found, with the largest piece making it about 20", the second largest piece made a separate channel and went about 18", and took the gas check with it.

Don't think I need to get any more of these bullets since they don't stabilize, I was expecting much more penetration, but I guess 20" is impressive for a bullet that wasn't even flying true.

720 grains @ 1750 fps kicks MORE than 405 grains @ 2550 fps.  Load was "XX grains of Powder A". ::)

Push em to 2000fps and they should stabilize, problem is, for how far!!

2000 fps...OUCH.  I'll give it a try.  I'm going to ream it out to where it will chamber looking like this-

Can you run through Quickoad with the 720 grain bullet and an OAL of 4.4"?  Best velocity possible with any powder.  Should be able to cram a bunch in there.

And 500 grain Hornady softpoints and 450 grain A-Frames seated .458 deep if you would please.

Need a 19.3 rate of twist at my current velocity.  21 inch twist at 2000 fps is what I get.  Doing something wrong I guess.

Recoil at 2000 fps with a guess of "AA" grains "Powder ?" is almost 120 ft lbs.

Where exactly did you find 720 gr bullets in .458?  That's like 1 3/4 ounces!

It is obvious from the video that you are a young man.
Keep that up and you will grow old real fast.
You have more BA--S than me that's for sure!
At 50 years I just don't care for that much punishment anymore.
My old shoulders won't take it.
There was a time though? Maybe?

I know what ya mean I have not yet shot my BC45/70 but had read and heard about letting the recoil push ya back instead of leaning into it. I was not sure how I was gonna teach myself that and am even more uncertain after watching him do it. But it appears he has it down pretty good!! Form looks like hell but the bullets gone by then I guess. Looks like your having a lot of fun with that project! Just be careful and don't shoot your eye out. And to think what a girly man I acted like shootin my 300win mag. Guess I just ain't got no S%$T in my blood anymore. Kurt

Braked/Silenced 50 BMG is not bad at all.  The big huge brake and the weight takes it down a lot.  Depending on the gun I'd say 243-308 recoil range.

LONGTOM-Put a 1lb recoil reducer in the stock and a Kick-Eez Magnum pad on it.  It doesn't hurt to shoot, except after a couple shots you get a headache.

Inputs are 1.677" long, .459" diameter, change the SG value to lead 11.3, that will give you 1:20" at 2000fps.

AtlLaw, in short terms, yes, and it will exceed it a bit with a 32" barrel.

Thanks Tyke, I musta been typing when you posted this.   ;D  I'd always heard the 450 NE was the professional hunter's caliber and was trying to get something to compare it with!

This the cheap way.  Maybe weld a couple Handi's together and you got yourself a $500 double rifle equal in at least power to the great English double guns. :o

As Tyler said, the 450NE has nothing on the 45-120 Nitro Express except the platform it's available in, it's really too bad the Remington SPR22 is limited to trapdoor loads, it would make a great poor man's double rifle. ;D

At 6.5 lbs?  Yikes.  500 grains at 2200 fps is 106 lbs of recoil.  I'd touch off the first barrel, but who knows about the second.

Who am I kidding, I'd shoot that second shot. ;)

About 90.  2000 fps will be much greater...well into the 120's of ft lbs.

Oh yeah, if anyone wants to donate a Ruger #1 in 45-70 for this testing, 720 grains at 2000 fps would be EASY.
