depreciation?
« on: September 08, 2008, 01:56:16 PM »
Greetings,

I have three NIB barrels & I was wondering about how much price difference there would be if they are unfired vs slightly used.

They are all 10" length.
The first is a 38 SPL octagon & the second is a 25-35 WCF, also octagon.
The third is a 270 REN, but is a bull barrel.

I wanted to know how much they would be devalued if I used them a few times vs leaving them unfired.
Guess I just want to know if I'm willing to take the hit to crank off a few rounds.

Thanks.

Easy answer is go to Ed K's website and compare prices between new, used and collector barrels.   He sponsors this forum, is a super gent and his website is linked under the GBO Sponsors.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Well,I tried that but here weren't any "new" vs "used" in my octagon calibers.
I didn't see the 270 REN at all.
Oh well!!!

Sorry that didn't work.   Bet if you gave Ed a call (and could actually catch him) he would gladly tell you what the trends are on your barrels between unfired and used.  He probably knows that better than anyone else would.   Maybe Don Wright would be a close second.

Just to blow some smoke...
In my opinion the greatest value loss from shooting an unfired barrel would apply to those barrels that are roughly considered collector barrels.   For the Classic Contender barrels (not G2) vintage is the "type" version (T1 to T9), but also could be barrels that were only offered to TCA members, or made in small numbers and for a very short time, etc.   Also IMO, all three of your barrels are at least calibers that are not often seen available anymore.   If memory serves (don't count on it without me digging catalogs out of storage) they all go back quite a ways when they were offered by the factory, with the 270 REN the newest for the IHMSA shooters.   So they may all be considered desireable barrels to the right buyers, but only shooters to others.

I know that doesn't help much, but only you can decide if value is more important to you than shooting any of them.   Any barrel is worth more unfired than used in the eye of most buyers.

From experience in having bough and sold many Encore and Contender barrels, I can tell you there is maybe $10 to $15 difference in general in the selling price between a new barrel being sold by a private individual and a slightly used barrel.

That said, the barrels you're selling would not be high on the list of what most people would want to buy.

I think that is a bit misleading info. The barrels you have are most likely desirable to barrel collectors and they might bring a premium from collectors and for them yes unfired is definitely better. None are likely of that much interest to the average shooter however. Unless you plan to keep them I'd say do not shoot them. If you shoot them plan on keeping them.

Collectors generally want 'em new. I'd figure on a 15-20 % decline in selling price if they're used.

Actually that does help. I consider myself a shooter, but not a collector, of various TC firearms. I'm certainly not up on what is collectible.
The octagons I bought just after the bull barrels came out, and the REN was intended for Field Pistol or Hunters Pistol silouette.
Somehow that never quite happened, as I was too wrapped in in big bore IHMSA. Too many calibers to try there!
I also have some TCA pistol & carbine barrels, but would never have thought of them as collectible.
Guess I'd better keep digging.

Thanks.

Thank you. That's starting to sound like more than I want to give up just for grins & giggles!
