7mm-08 vs. 280

I never here anything here about the 280 in the Handi, seems like i here
lots about the 7mm-08.
the 280 has a more choices in factory loads and is a little better ballistic wise
is it just personal preference or am i missing some thing. now that nosler has made the 280 ackly improved a factory load has any one reamed a 280
handi to this. ;D

I have both.  The 280 is probably my favorite rifle round of all.  It performs great in the 26" handi barrel.   Nothing wrong with the 7mm-08 though.   It's just like the 308, 30-06 debate.  You'll get all sorts of opinions.

I agree, there is no clear answer, it is matter of personal choice. I think in bolt gun the 7mm-08 has the advantage because of the shorter stroke and stiffer receiver. In a single shot that is all out the window because the case length is not going to be a problem. In the Handi particularly you get a 26" barrel. If you hand load, you can load it down to 7mm-08 levels and up to the full bore 280 loads, which by the way are not too short of the 7mm Rem Mag. I love the 7mm-08, but in a Handi I would take the 280.

If you hand load then this isn't a problem, but if you use factory loads, then the 7-08 is going to be easier to find ammo for.

Having said that, I've had problems finding ammo at times because it wasn't that they didn't carry the 7-08, but that they were out of them.

I can't recall seeing 280 ammo anywhere although I wasn't really looking for it either.

I have a 280 Improved Ultra and a 280 Handi, you can't shoot factory 280 Improved ammo, or 280 ammo for that matter, in an improved 280 H&R, the barrel can't be set back to accomplish that as it can on a threaded barrel, so it's a fire form proposition only. They are both great calibers and you will not go wrong with either. I have Handi Rifles in, among other calibers,  7x57 and .280 Remington, but not in a 7mm-08. Some day I will hopefully find a good deal on a 7mm-08 barrel and get one, but for now I would suggest just consider the .280 Remington like a 7mm-08 on steroids. I reload, and if you do as well I would suggest the .280 Remington. I find .280 Remington ammo everywhere in the northeast, and even get some good deals on it occasionally as well. It is a great caliber, capable of cleanly and efficiently harvesting anything in the lower 48. I do have a Browning BLR in 7mm-08 and that is nice gun and the caliber is very efficient and a great deer caliber....<><....:)

I have a 280 and thought since i very seldom here about the cal. here
thought maybe i had made a mistake. bought mine with plastic stocks,
have traded around and now have 2 25-06 ultra with cin. lam. one set of lam
is going on the 280.

My second Handi was a .280 that I took in trade on something.
Mounted a scope on it and it shot very nicely. I had a .270 Howa at
the time and decided I didn't need both. Traded the .280 Handi and a 686
for an Encore 209x50. One of the, if not the, worst deals I ever made.
Messed around with the Encore for a couple of years and ended up getting rid of it, at a loss.
Should've kept the .280.
