How about them Swedes!

Awhile back I picked up a sporterized Swede, 6.5x55 on a trade. The barrel was shiney, looked great, had a scope mount, but the owner had brassed inlayed his initials on the stock. 4 applications of Wipeout later, I threw a Burris compact on it, sighted in and shot some Privi Partisan. Whoa, cloverleafs at 100yds! Tomarrow its going antelope hunting. Anybody else hunt with the Swede?

The more I use it the better I like it.  I wish I had known about it 30 years ago.  I tried a 6.5 Carcano and thought the 6.5 x 55 would be comparable. Boy was I wrong.

I really like the 6.5's and the Swede in particular.  The one rifle I had built just for me and to my specifications was on a M96 action with a new 6.5x55 barrel.  A work of art she is!  Still don't handload for it since it shoots every factory round I've ever fed it into an inch @100!

Took two deer at just over 400 yards and one at just 500 with mine!
CZ550 american.  Hand loads og H380 and 100gr Nosler partitions.  I think that would be a good load on goats too.

I have 3 6.5x55 original swedish mausers. One a Carl Gustav and the other two huskies. One of the carbine huskies is totally sporterized now with a good scope and it is as accurate as anything I have ever seen. Easy 1" groups with half minute of angle shooting very possible with many loads. It pretty much doesn't shoot any load bad, but loves 120gr Nosler ballisic tips and 95 gr V-Maxs.

Took home a little buck Antelope yesterday, Swede did great, nice one shot down. Meat in the freezer. Thanks for all the replies! Swedes seem to be pretty accurate for being military type rifles.

6.5x55 is my favorite rifle round for sure.  I also had an M-96 sporter but I think I got one of the rare lemons.  Diff handloads, diff seating depths, diff scopes/mounts, replaced the trigger, etc, and I could never get it under about 2.5" groups.  Don't think it was me as I can pickup other rifles I have and do 0.5" or 0.75" right afterwards.  That's technically good enough to hunt with, but I just didn't like those groups.

Ended up selling it, but I'm really, really wanting to pickup another 6.5x55 - sporterized or modern rifle.  It and the .257 Roberts are neck and neck for my fav cartridge .

I have a Tikka T-3 in a 6.5x55.  It shoots 120 grn and 140 grn equally as accurate.  Haven,t tried anything else.  I have never had a buy off the shelf no gunsmith work on the trigger and such shoot this good.  Always sub-moa from the bench, on a lucky day 3 shots touching!  There are a lot of good firearms and they don't have to be a particular brand for me.  They just have to shoot accurately.  I will give this one to a friend or nephew when I get to old to hunt, it is something else.  I remember when I took it home and went to the range.  The first shots were with a 139 grn Hornady factory standard load.  I was just amazed at the accuracy and the lack of recoil.  When I shot my first buck it went 10 yards.  This firearm is perfect for teenagers, gals, and recoil sensitive people.  Like some of the guys that have to have shoulder and neck surgery.  Try this caliber, lots of killing power and not much recoil.  As you can tell this firearm has earned my respect!     Buckfever

The 6.5x55 is a very pleasant cartridge to shoot. Probably one of the best designs of all time and perfect for deer and antelope. I really wanted to use mine on pronghorn this year, but I got an archery tag. My mauser will put a few whitetails down again this year though, once the TN gun season opens.

My Rem. 700 Classic (1994) in 6.5x55 is all set and ready to go.  I bought it a few months ago off Gunbroker so this will be the first season for the Swede and me.

Antelope season will be a few days old before I can get out.  About Sept. 26 I'll be slitherin' through the sagebrush with 140 gr. Hdy. SP Interlocks in the chamber looking for my first big game harvest with the Swede.  I'll go after deer with it a couple weeks later.  And I very well may take it out for elk.

I have a matching rifle in 35 Whelen that always performs well on elk but it may stay in the cabin this year.  Since the General Elk License allows me to take any elk for the entire season, Oct. 15 - 31, I have the luxury of passing up shot opportunities that aren't just right.

My only concern is that I'll find out that I have no need to even own a Whelen.

If we all owned .30-06s we have no need for any other rifle, but then what would we do with all that spare time & money?

i have to agree. i finally got my k98 "swede" mauser project finished and shot it at the range today. i got 3 shots into the same ragged hole at 50 yards. didn't have time to mess with 100 yards, but that groups was the first 3-shot group out of this rifle.

and i removed the old recoil pad for this rifle, thinking i could get another one but i have not replaced it yet...that should say a lot about the lack of recoil. it STILL didn't kick.

I am VERY happy with this rifle.
