min. load in 15 in. 209x50
« on: September 09, 2008, 03:54:16 PM »
hey guys I'm going to the range as soon as the weather breaks. i had shoulder surgery and the doc said i could try shooting the pistol but no long guns. i just put together a encore 15 in. 209x50 with a red dot . i have not shot it yet but my buddy did with 2 777 pellets and a t/c 240 sabot . he said it kicked like a 44 mag . I'm not to sure I'm ready for the 44mag recoil  ??? >:( so how low can i go with 777 loose 2f or will one pellet work just to get the feel of this till my shoulder is good to go
thanks for all / any info b44mag

that is  a lot of kick.

I say start out with 60-70 grains pyrodex or t7 and find a light weight conical or sabot.

bigblock so you think 60 is as low of a charge i can use I'm just wanting to get a feel of this gun before i go hunting i want to start as low as i can then work up from there i thought i read about using 50 grains in a long gun for small game so i thought i could go lighter than that because the barrel is only 15 in. but i don't want to be pulling out bullets that didn't make it out

No worries about a light load b44.  Go on down to 40 grains if you want.  I assure you the bullet will exit the gun with authority.  Remember, the classic old black powder 44-40 cartridge round was used in both rifles and revolvers - 40 grains black powder and a 200 or 225 grain lead bullet.  That round has certainly killed a deer or two.

yeah that makes sense i will try 40 to start. when i get to the range ill post how it was .thanks for the help now all i can do is hope the shoulder will take it. let me tell you all a story
i went to the range last oct to learn how to shoot a front stuffer . i shot for about two hrs with 100 gr. 2f a 295 pb got the gun all sighted in at 100 about 1 1/2 3 shot group . i wanted to see what 150 shot like just in case i ever wanted to shoot 150. so i dropped 3 50 50 pellets in the gun put the pb in and seated it. a older fellow about 70 to 75 came down to the range so i left the ramrod in the gun leaned it on the bench. it took him about 30 min. to get his stuff to the bench .when he finally got his ear muffs on i picked the gun up put a primmer in it and pulled the trigger .WOW i got scoped real bad not bad enough to bleed but pretty close. by this time I'm thinking wow that was a lot of recoil . then i looked down and realized i had shot the ramrod. now this was a stupid mistake but it gets better . i just got done reading a article about 5 days prier to the range incident about paying attention to the ram rod . i thought to my self what kind of fool dose this . well let me tell you THIS ONE did it. so my forhead was sore and so was my shoulder.  i didn't think to much about it at the time i just figured it would be OK . after a week i could hardly touch my other shoulder with my right arm so i went to see the doc.  he got me a xray bones were OK but the mri i got a couple days later showed that i had pinch tore my shoulder muscle in half and ripped it off my bone . so he said it may heal in about 8 months but I'm not that lucky.  i had surgery day after fathers day. i  spent 4 days in the hospital because the nerve block paralyzed my right lung and collapsed my left lung . i spent 3 hrs on the ventilator till the lungs pumped back up. so the moral to the story is pay close attention to your ram rod.  this is and was a stupid mistake that i hope never happens to anyone else . i think I'm going to paint the front of my ram rod orange now that i read this.  but i dont think i will do this again after all the s#$t i went through oh and let me tell you about therape you get the picture im sure
b44mag  it was and is a pain in the shoulder

I use this same barrel now and use 50 grains of Goex with a 240 grain T/C cheap shot sabot and it shoots great ! 1 5/8" group at 40 yards.

2  777 pellets will feel like a 45/70 in a hand gun. 50 grains will let you know it is there.
I started mine out at 65 grains and I thought "holy crap" thats way too much recoil, one would start to get jumpy and lose your groups from holding too tight to the grips.....

I don't shoot past the 40-50 mark as all of my muzzleloader deer that I have taken in the past have been way less than 40 yards anyway so I don't expect to shoot out to 100 yards but if I need to I am sure that it would put a deer down with 50 grains.

BTW I question wether both pellets are even burning before it leaves the 15" barrel, (may explain the lighter felt recoil your buddy felt).

Have fun and let me know how it shoots for you.

That's a heck of a story b44.  I shot a ramrod down range one time also, but didn't have any damage to the body or the gun.  I sure gets your attention though.  Hope your healing progresses rapidly.  And oh, styrofoam ramrods won't work.  ;)

It sure should kill a deer at out to 75 yards.

Load it up and shoot it (seat of the pants judgement). You will see for yourself that there is plenty coming out of that pistol to do what you want from it for hunting.
You will have this " holy crap" look on your face when you pull that trigger, then all thoughts of "is this enough" will go away.

Shoot it and have fun !

You might want to use a shooting stick of some sort as it is a lot of pistol to hold out there steady enough to produce decent groups and to sight it in.
