Super Redhawk 454 Casull with High Gloss finish
« on: September 10, 2008, 03:13:44 AM »
Hello, I just purchased a used Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull 7.5" barrel. It has a different finish than the one on Ruger's web sight. It looks a lot like the Super Redhawk 44 mag, only this gun has a high polish finish. Has anyone seen, or know if this finish was offered from the factory, or was it an after market deal? Also is this steel as strong as the "Target Grey" steel on the regular Ruger Super Redhawk 454's?

1life - Rugers "Target Grey" steel is some type of "paint/coating". You have a regurlar SRH 454 that has had its facotry finish removed and then polished. You can dull the finish with blasting or scotch brighting.

Actually the target grey finish is done by a propreitory treatment Ruger does to the material.  Sort of a tumbling bath from my understanding.  It's not an actual coating I don't believe.
the SRH's have not been available with the gloss finish.

I thought the shiny ones were early production, but I may very easily be wrong.

Did you buy it used? I had a friend that loved polishing his stainless steel guns until they looked like chrome.

I bought it used and the only thing the guy behind the counter, said when I asked him is that, it might have been a special run through a distributor, he was not sure, it was a big place with a lot of workers, they had just taken it in on trade the week before. I was looking for a used ruger 454 at the time and at first thought it was a 44 mag, but after looking closer I relized it was a 454. I liked the way it looked, so I got it. Is there any way to tell how old it is? Thanks for the replies.

I would contact Ruger & I would like to hear what they say. It is definately not Target Gray, I still think it is an early production run. I believe they made a few 454's with Stainless before they decided they needed
to go to the steel used with the target grew finish.

Good idea. I looked on Ruger's web site, and checked the serial # this gun was made in 2000, Ruger came out with the 454 SRH in 1999, so it is an early one. I also e-mailed Ruger and asked if my gun left there factory with the finish that is on it.

That's a nice looking shooter. I have the same thing in the target gray. The finish is the only complaint I have about this revolver. I'm thinking about sending it somewhere to get it polished. I would also like to get all the writing polished off the barrel. I think the people at MagnaPort do this. Getting the barrel ported might be nice as well. This thing is a handfull.

I had magnaport rework my 44 srh. They did remove the warning off the barrel. I forget what it cost but the work was great. They have prices on their web site.

Ruger, replied to my e-mail, "All of our Casull models have the target grey finish" so this must have been an after market polish job. Thanks for all the replies.
