Illinois Black Bear?
« on: September 10, 2008, 04:46:56 AM »
A farmer in Bureau county IL near Naponset reported seeing a 7' black bear near one of his corn fields.  I saw this on the news last night.  The guy said the bear stood up and looked at him from the edge of the field and then dropped down and walked into the corn.

I'm just a wee little bit skeptical, too many things don't add up.  A 7' bear is a big animal, the bear was standing next to the corn so he should have had a good guide to the bear's size.  Western Illinois has had around 1.5" of rain since last Thurs.  Why did this giant of a bear not leave any tracks?  Why was the bear not seen before?  Bureau county is a long way into Illinois.  I guess it isn't completely out of the realm of possibility, but I'll believe it when the DNR drives away with it in the back of a truck.

I've heard rumors of bears in southern Illinois where I hunt but I haven't seen any yet. I also heard there were armadillos there.

I know I am a ways from Illinois central portion...but here in SE Missouri ...there are numerous reports , confirmed ones, about black bears.    Near Jackson Missouri , Cape Girardeau,  Advance , Mo      etc...and they are all over the area near current river, Jacks Fork, and the Eleven Point   in the southern Missouri ozarks....not too much of a stretch to think they can cross the river at any point along the border between Mo and Illinois......but  you are right..a 7' bear is big....I don't know if bears are like big cats, where the established male runs off the juvenile males...if the bear population is indeed growing in Missouri...it would make sense the "zone " or ring of distribution may be growing.....I always say the same thing about bear sightings...big cat sightings , bigfoot, etc......with as many varieties of trail cameras there are....I would say , get as many folks to put them up in the areas of interest as possible....bait accordingly ...and see what happens......as long as the intent is just observation , not baiting to kill...pretty sure there'd be some frowns on that in a state that probably does not have a Bear Season on the books...

I am in the central IL area and the last reliable report of a black bear sighting in this area was in 1942 and before I was even a gleam in my fathers eye.
There seemed to be more Cougar sightings in that time but this was even earlier and in the 20's & 30's. We still get what I would call (reliable Cat sightings) every couple years but nothing on bears yet. There has been a couple of Elk taken in the last 10years or so by the upstate deer hunters while deer hunting and they were both allowed to continue hunting with no penaltys as the Elk were a non-Illinois game species.

The thing is that those River's from the Missouri to the Illinois to the Mississippi and their junctions do make for plausible travel corridors for wildlife...especally in the winter time or even the seclusion that the agricultural crops provide in the summer & fall. We still don't know how those Coyotes got across the Mississippi river though  ::) have some good ideas on this though.

I can tell you for a fact that there are black bear in Missouri.  I was driving from central Illinois to Joplin Missouri in May of 2004.  I was roughly 2 hours from Springfield, Missouri when I saw, in all it's splendor, a road kill black bear along the highway.  There was no mistaking what this was.  If Missouri has them then I would dare to say that Illinois has at least seen a few wandering around.

You want to talk about close???!!!  Hugo is about 3 miles from my house!  They mentioned in the article that this might have come from a nearby animal rescue but that's bunk.  She literally lives a few hundred yards from my house and she has never had a black bear.  I have no doubt that this animal was all natural.

Yes, the Douglas Co. black bear was all natural and from the wild......
It just came from the wild hauled here from Wis. where it was picked up as a roadkill.
Individual who has came forward started to skin it and the stopped (too much stank!).
Bear was dumped for nature to clean it off and he was going to return for skull later.

Black Bears might end up in IL, but I do not think Douglas Co will be the first location.

Where did you come up with this information?  I have not seen this in any of our local papers nor did I find it on the IDNR website.  The last thing that was in the papers that I saw was that the autopsy showed it came from PA not WI.  The thing that baffles me here is that our neighbor swears that this was the animal that he had to run off after it tangled with his dogs.  This was approximately 2 months ago.  I am still placing my money on a wild bear that strayed from home.  Missouri has black bears so it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

I still think the black bears are hiding behind all the wild boars down in the Shawnee. Kurt

I saw something that they thought the bear was from Pennsylvania. Do you think it hitch hiked here?

Newspaper article today says the bear is from PA.  Someone hit the bear with a truck in PA then hauled it to IL to dump it.  The bear weighed 150 to 200lbs.  It is illegal to take a roadkill bear out of PA.

This is not the same bear story that started this thread.

I got the state wrong on the Douglas Co bear.  It was from Pa. as they have just released.
