Favorite ammunition for .223
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:55:36 AM »
Well I have a .223 heavy barrel on order. Im sure that I will buy a couple of WalMarts cheapest ammo for reasons of breaking in the barrel, getting sighted in, and getting our son use to shooting the rifle. My question is that I was wondering if I can get a name and weight of what seems to be your best grouping ammunition ? I would like to see if there two or possible three people who mention having good luck with the same ammo.

I bought a .223 Bull Barrel a while back and did the same thing you are doing. I went to Wally World and bought 2 boxes of the UMC stuff to break it in.
Truth be told, the stuff shoots great out of my gun.
I have shot some very tight groups with the UMC ammo. Not everyone has the same luck with it but for me it shoots good.
I also shoot some dirt cheap Barnaul ammo. This ammo shoots good but not as well as the UMC. I don't know why but my gun likes the UMC better.

I haven't tried any expensive ammo because the cheap stuff is shooting good for me.

I have since bought another Rossi. A 7.62x39. I usually buy Handi Rifles (I have 10 of them) but I could not find a 7.62x39 Handi.
Crazy thing about this one is, it loves the Barnaul ammo (123 gr. Hollow Points). I shoot tight groups with this ammo and it is dirt cheap too!!

Now these are the only 2 Rossi's I own because I really love my Handi's but I gotta say, these things are really good guns and they are cheap (I paid WELL under $200 out the door for each of them).

Now I know there is alot of H&R vs. Rossi talk but I'll be honest, my Rossi's shoot every bit as good as my Handi's (The Rossi's do look a little funky though!!)

What are you planning on using for a scope?? I have 3-9x40 Bushnell's on both of mine. I like the Bushnell's for their brightness.

Good luck with your .223 and happy shooting. Give us a range report when you can.

Thanks spanky9773 Im glad to hear the good news from shooting your rifle with the cheap ammo. I hope mine likes it as well. I dont know what or if I will be scoping the rifle with. I just purchased two new Nikon 4 X 32 for my .22 and .22 Magnum because I couldnt believe how much optics have improved over the last few years. I am originally a Bushnell man ;) I just mailed in my old 4 X 20(i think)Bushnell a couple of days ago because they said they would fix it or replace it. Ive had it for at least fifteen years and they dont make them any more so they will probably replace it. Anyway Im raising our two sons up to use open sights. The oldest shoots his Henry .22 (gift from passing hunter safety course) and our youngest shoots his .177 break barrel Gamo...both with open sights. I figure I might put the fixed/replaced Bushnell scope on the .223 but Im not sure yet because all of our shots should be 100 yards and less and they are use to shooting open sights. Most shots will be around 50 yards.
I hope our WalMart sells the UMC  ???

I recieved a Rossi .223 Remington heavy barrel for Christmas two years ago from my wife.  I bought a couple of the Winchester white box 40 count in 45 grain hollow point.  I still working on the last 20 or so.  They will shoot inside a clay pigion at 250 yards and head shoot rock chucks at over 100.  I've also worked up some hand loads with 50 grain V-max bullets that will shoot with the Winchesters.  It seems to like BL-C2 but will shoot X-terminator and Varget with good results but not as good as the BL-C2.  Hope you have as much fun with yours as I have had with mine.  By the way - I also have a Bushnell 3 - 9 scope on mine.
Thanks,
Trapper Jack
