Which one shoots the best ?
« on: September 10, 2008, 01:50:03 PM »
I bought a basic 45-70 two yrs ago and I've had so much fun with it that I'm thinking of buying another single shot. I want a .243 but I've heard too many bad things about them on this thred. So could you suggestion something similar.
Forgot to mention I bought the Bushnell Banner 1.5 x4.5 scope you suggested and it has been just great on the 45-70. My rifle doesn"t throw the empties out so it gets a litttle exciting when in amongst a bunch of wild boar.
I took a wild tumble on my 4 wheeler with the rifle and scope last  Sat.,just got back from the range and it shoots dead on like it did 2 years when sighted in.
However I bough another scope just like it for my Ml and it went belly up an hour ago at the gun range, won't focus or adjust. Back to Bushnell tomorrow !
Sorry for the rambling, but give me suggestions on a new Cal.rifle and scope. ;D

Personaly I like the 270 but if you want something more in line with the 243 might I suggest the 7mm08 or maybe a 308.
A little more than the 243 granted but I think you would like either one.

If you are looking for something comparable to the 45/70, how about the 444 marlin? I just picked up a new gray laminated stock 444 marlin a couple months ago and really like it. I sent it off for a trigger job and muzzle brake and it is now one of my more favorite medium bore rifles. If you get a 308, there are lot's of options that can be done with it as far as new chambering options go. I have two of the H&R models with the laminated stocks in 308 that I had reworked and am really impressed with them. I put a bushnell trophy scope on these guns and they work more than fine for their use.

I don't care for any of the rimless cartridges in the Handi.  The .30-30 is awesome.  That's what I'd get.

The 7mm-08 extractor is an excellent shooter with 140 gr. Hornadys.  Light recoil and it'll do more for you than either the .243 or the .30-30.  All the extractors I have work perfectly with rimless cartridges.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

yea, I was thinking maby a .25-06. How long a bbl do they have. I just want something simple to carry in my truck for coyotes or perhaps a deer and have had very good luck with the .243  I'm handicapped and it's legal for me to shoot out of my truck in Mo.
