log over creek bobcat sets?
« on: September 10, 2008, 04:09:33 PM »
yesterday while prospecting for mink and coon sign on the creek behind my house, i noticed 3 trees felled by last years ice storm, laying bank to bank over the creek.mink sign didnt look overly abundant but i have several bcats in this area and a few years ago saw a cat crossing the creek on a log similiar to these.would i do good to chop trap notches in these logs now and set them later for cats or coons?

i think it would be very wise to go out and pre chop your trap beds in the logs. it will give you time to make the beds perfect without the hassel of having all your gear. plus they will be available for any other critters that want to cross the logs. take a little harder look and see if there is a crossing they use more than others and look at the ends of the logs for other critter sign. i have found that snares are the ticket for log crossings. one  reason is they are cheap and u can't always find good sign but enough to wish you had a trap sitting there. so u can set snares at any logs that look good to u and all your traps are still available for your choice sets. i live on riverbottoms that are fully loaded with fallen logs and have found they are good sets if u give them time. will add some nice pelts for the shed.good luck and feel fre to talk to me about this situation.

sometimes, probably most times, its easier and more productive, to make regular sets at the ends of crossing logs. Either blind trial sets or dirtholes.

If you have any beaver dams in the area, they are also good highways to set--for cats. They are also used by just about any other animal, also.
