NEF Huntsman shooting low
« on: September 11, 2008, 07:22:21 AM »
Hi all,

New here and need some assistance with a newly acquired 50 cal Huntsman that I have run out of elevation adjustment on and am still hitting 2 inches low at 50 yards.  I started with 70 grains of Triple 7 FFG and increased to 100 grains with very little difference in impact point.

It is unmodified, now has 20 shots through it with the Williams Firesight to the top of the ramp.  Anyone heard of this problem in the past and any potential solutions available?

I was looking at the Williams web site and noted an adjustable front sight that looks like it would fit but even at the lowest possible setting I am not sure I will get the adjustment needed to bring me up to a reasonable sight-in.

Thoughts, musings and suggestions most welcome.

Cheers, Bob

Probably not a very helpful suggestion but you could just go ahead and mount a scope on it.

Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

You need a lower front sight, you can buy a lower Firesight, ramp or insert depending on what kind it has now, or contact H&R and see if they can offer you one, toll free (866)776-9292. The Peep and Firesights topic in the FAQs sticky shows some options if you want to make just buy what you need.

Bob,

Call Customer Service and tell them you need a shorter front Fire-Sight. It is their problem, not yours, and they should replace it at their cost. T/C has the same problem with some of their Omega's. T/C Customer Service has promptly taken care of any sight problems by sending out another front sight, and so should Big Green. Good Luck, hope you can get it before your season starts.

Hi again everyone and thanks for the suggestions.  I thought I should update on progress (or lack of progress...)

Following advice mentioned above, I called H&R and spoke to Tech Support.  After a few questions they agreed that somehow the regular front sight would not work and upon checking had nothing else they could send me.  They suggested I call Brownell's Tech support and obtain a lower front sight.  They also gave me the number (already in the FAQ's) for the Canadian Service Depot in Manitoba in case Brownell's were not able to supply the needed item.

I contacted Brownell's Tech Support and they were very helpful.  Suggested an alternate (lower) front sight that might work and transferred me to the order desk to place the order.  The order desk was excellent and helped me through the process, collecting all the information required to complete the order and I decided since I was shipping an order I might as well obtain some additional items too!  At the final step the order desk put in the part numbers for the items, first item (the lower front sight) was in stock but guess what?  They were unable to ship it to Canada as the manufacturer (Williams) was not listed on the Export Approved (or something like that) list.  All other items could be shipped.

Since the main item would not be coming, I canceled the order and decided to contact the Canadian Service Depot in Manitoba.

I have done that but they were not answering their phone, left a voice mail for a call back and will now wait for that.

Frustrating, but making some headway...

Has anyone done any chronograph measurements for the 26" barrel 50 Cal Huntsman?  I am wondering what to expect for Muzzle Velocity for different charges of Triple Seven FFG and the Hornady 44 Cal 240 Grain XTP with Sabot?

Thanks again for all the sage advice.

Bob

Bob, if that doesn't work out for ya with the Canadian dealer, I'd be glad to order it and send it to you myself, I've sent a lot of stuff to members in Canada and other places worldwide including sights, reloading equipment and components, let me know. ;)

Wow!

Tim, thank you so much for the offer!

I am overwhelmed at the kindness of the outdoors/shooting community in general and now this site in particular.  Here I am, someone that just joined and after only 2 posts I have been offered something that is more than could ever be expected.

I appreciate the kindness and will keep you posted on the results of my search in Canada, I might just have a huge shopping list for ya!

Again, thanks so much and all the best!

Bob
