Famous uses on Firearms?
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:06:48 AM »
Most people in the western days are noted to use the Winchester 1873 and The Colt 45 and other black powder pistols. But my question is who actually used the winchester 1892 and the 1894. (rangers, lawmen, outlaw) any ideas???

My grandfather, Claus Alvin Stillman 1892-1980 used an 1894 in 25-35 for most of his adult life.
He was a homesteader in central Montana begining in the 1920's after returning from France and WWI, ran a sawmill, blacksmith shop and general jack of all trades. He mostly shot skunks, foxes and coyotes with it although it did provide much venison. It is now all beat to heck from laying in the bottom of the buckboard for many years, bore is unshootable but it is still with the family.
The closest he got to anyone of fame was as a child in Landusky MT, his mother took in wash and specialized in the high starch collars popular at the time. Her regular customer was Kid Curry.

Don't know if you will find many "famous" users of the 1892 and 1894, most were honest working folk like grandpa.

Tom Horn was said to have carried an 1894 Winchester rifle in .30 WCF (30/30) in the last years of his life. Also, the outlaw Harry Tracy had a Winchester 1894 30/30 when he was wounded and eventually commited suicide in a Washington state wheatfield. The Winchester was beside his lifeless body when the posse approached, along with a handgun.

By the time the 92 and 94 became popular the west had settled down quite a bit. Most of the famous names and glamour associated with the old west came earlier. Both models did however outsell the 1873 due to the rise of hunting for sport. To answer your question everyone used them from hunters to ranchers, to LE, you name it. Most opting for the smokless 30-30 which had more power than the 44-40 and was handier and more familier than the 7mm and 30-40.
