For carry use I'd go with the 40 S&W or the 357 Sig.  Better yet, by a 40 S&W and then get a 357 Sig barrel for it.  It will drop right in.

I chose the .40 as my first Glock.  I have a 23 that is my primary carry.  It really depends on what you are going to do with it and what size frame you are planning on.  I hope to have a 36 here in the next day or two.  So, why did you decide on only these three calibers?

My advice is get a .40 , it's the most practical in a few ways and a good stopper , if street fighting is your game.
Now , if you plan on hunting and need to fight your way threw gang turf to get to the woods , then get a 10mm

If you must have a .40 and plan to carry it, the mdl 23 is the one. For about a 100 bucks you can buy a .357 Sig barrel for it and have both. The 9mm barrel is rumored to work ok in the 22/23 as well.  If maximum versatility is the name of the game, and you have no plans to carry it concealed, then get a mdl 20 ! I'm sure someone makes barrels for it in .40/.357. The mdls 20/21 are a bit large for concealed carry, for my use anyway.

a little info on why i want one. 2 weeks ago i was scouting for the up coming deer season. 2 big dog were following me in the woods but kept their distance. after about 10 mins. one of them started to growl. the only thing i had was a bush knife. they never came close enough to swing at them. but i was thinking if i had a pistol i would pop one of them. so i thought about a 9mm can kill a dog but with all the drug users and want-to-be gangsters who don't want to work for a living i want to be able to put a big hole in someone if i have to.

I bought a 22 40 S&W, then added 9mm and 357 Sig barrels, all accurate and work great.
