The new Alliant website data update lists loads for the above handgun cartridges using...gasp...BlueDot
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/Index.htm
So much for all those who panicked and tossed all their handloads that used BD.

J/k about the panic of course - but from reading posts on other gun sites you'd have thought that BlueDot was totally unsuited for handgun cartridges.  Apparently Alliant does not agree with that sentiment.  Neither do thousands of competent handloaders.   Don't be afraid guys.   ;)

You need to relook at the above warning. It was for 357 with 125 grain bullets and all 41 magnum bullet wieghts. If you look at the site you linked to, there is no Blue Dot listed for 357 125 grain bullets or the 41 Magnum. I had some Remington 125 loaded for 357 with Blue Dot and pulled them down. I am still not sorry I did it.

You need to re-read my post above.  ;)

My issue was with those who panicked and stated crazy things like "Alliant says not to use BlueDot in the .45LC" or "BlueDot should not be used in handgun cartridges".  These and even more outrageous statements were posted on many shooting sites - surely you saw some of them.

BTW, is Lyman, Nosler and Sierra data using BlueDot with 125-grain bullets suddenly dangerous just because Alliant pulled their own old loading data?  (Alliant still lists BD data for 110 and 140-grain bullets in the .357 Magnum.)   Just wondering.....  ;)

I miss under stood you - Sorry. I got the impression you were saying that Blue Dot was good for all applications and the warning was just a bunch of BS.

1. I did not panic and dump all of my Blue dot. In fact the ones I pulled down, I just dumped it back in the canister it came out of for later use, with a more appropriate application.
2. I will heed Alliant's warning, I do not care what Hornady, Nosler, Sierra or who it is. Alliant makes the powder and they should know what is safe and what is not safe. If they say I should not be using it in my 41 Mags or with 125 grain bullets in my 357, then I am not going to think I know more than they do. They simply stated that in these certain applications Blue Dot should not be used. They certainly are not going to say one of their products are bad without pulling it off the market and have a recall.
3. I do not have so much loyalty to a powder that I will risk life or limb just because, I can be stubborn, but I am not stupid.

You should have asked all those that are being paniced, if they would send all that BAD powder your way. As far as I know it is still a good powder for other Alliant recommended applications, just not the ones in thier warning.

I had the Blue Dot and Remington 125's on hand and wanted a medium load for self defense and doing some general shooting with my 4" S&W 66. The Blue Dot seemed to fit this application, so I loaded up some. I shot a few of them and noticed that some of the primers were flater than others, but none that showed that they were over pressure by any means. I just chocked it up to differences in the cylinders, after all I was not loading any where near the top ??? Then the warning. Down they did come. I had other powders I could use for the same purpose. I know there are guys out there that have used Blue Dot in handguns for a long time and there have been no trouble at all. I am not sure there would have been trouble with my loads, but why take a chance. I only lost a couple of hours time, I think it was well spent. I did not throw out the rest of my Blue Dot either, I will find another way to use it up, safely. Maybe with one of my 44 Mags :-\

I've been using bluedot in my 44 mag and 9 MM for years. I like to use it for my handguns since I use it for all my shotgun field loads. I don't have to stock additional powders by using the bluedot.

I never used BD with 125 grain slugs but it is my go to powder for 158 grain LSWC cast bullets.  I have loaded a few up well over max load and shot them in my Taurus M66 and the only thing these hurt was my hand.  My favorite load is a little under max charge and it is very accurate.  BTW, I have found BD to be a very predictable powder in my 357.
