Big time expansion
« on: September 12, 2008, 06:06:54 PM »
Tested some 500 grain Hornady Softs into oak logs today.  All of them went about 12" in and expanded hellaciously.

45 caliber 405 gain cast for comparison.  First one expanded to .85", second expanded to .96", third expanded to an amazing 1.1"

Pretty pleased with performance.

What I'm not pleased with is 45-70 Leverevolution loads.  I shot one of these at a coffee jug 25 yards away, somehow it shot WAY low, barely skidded across the top of my clay yard and didn't even bust the bottom of the coffee jug.  Maybe, and a very generous maybe, 1 foot of penetration, with the bullet just skimming on top of clay.  The mushroom looks great, but I don't think this bullet would have made it through a deer shoulder.  For comparison my subsonic 45-70 squirrel loads travel over 2 feet into the same yard.  Maybe it was just the load, but either the round was going real slow and somehow the bullet still expanded, or the thing can't penetrate through wet toilet paper.

I have never shot any Leverevolution ammo. I do know that a bullet traveling at higher velocity will generally shoot lower than a slow bullet. This is due to the barrel raise. A faster bullet will get out the end of the barrel before it moves up from recoil, thus shoot lower. This is really dramatic in a hand gun. A heavy recoiling gun will also show quite a bit of difference also. A 300 grain bullet traveling at 2000 fps in comparison to a 400 grain bullet traveling at 1200 fps. The 300 grain slug will shoot lower than the 400 grain bullet. As far as bullet expansion is concerned - I have a clay yard also. I know there is considerable difference in it when it is very damp (like a thick putty) compared to being dry (like a brick). You should really check it out at 100 yards or more. Make a comparison of one to the other under more controlled conditions. A heavy slow moving bullet will penetrate quite a bit. The Leverevolution bullets are designed to travel flatter and further than standard shaped bullets, in other words it is for longer distance shooting. You probably will not get near the expansion at 100 yards as you do at 25 yards, but considerably more than a cast bullet. BTW - you will always get more penetration out of a hard cast slug compared to a controlled expansion jacketed slug.

Those aren't cast bullets at the top, they are 500 grain Hornady Softs.

I am surprised you got any expansion on the 500 gr Hdy. As far as I recall, they were made for the .458 Win Mag. Are these hot loads in the 45-70??

Hornady advised me that their 350 gr. RN's need at least 1800 fps to expand properly

They're from my 45-120 running about 2200ish fps.  Around 458 Lott ballistics...and recoil. :P

QL prediction.  I was over 100 fps fast than QL predicted with the 405 grainers, so these should be getting 2200 fps.

I just re-read what your target was for those Hdy's. I gather you are going to go logging with them. ;D

For pictures go to the Hornady website, they got pics and info on all of their "boolits"

My first 45-70 JB Young Crater-2 loads went clean through a 18" thick live oak at 25 yards. Of course I am still waiting to get feeling back in my right arm, but it was impressive.
