Looking for info, single shot handgun....
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:02:43 PM »
Hi guys, hope that this is the most appropriate forum to post this on. I'm looking for info on a single-shot hunting handgun that was sold under different names about 10-15 years ago. They are easy to identify as they have a unique "cannon-breach" lock-up, a round, rotary assembly that is grabbed, rotated about 45 degree's to open/load, then rotated again to put into battery. A lever  under the barrel is pivoted back to cock it...
There's one in a local gun store in .44 mag., with the name "Ordanance Tech". I seem to remember that back in the day they maye have been sold under the name of Desert Eagle?? As I recall they also came in pretty stout calibers, like 7/08.
Looking for info, opinions, etc. about this. Also, the one I am looking at is "slick", any idea if they used a commonly available scope base, or was it a one-off, specialty item?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Mark

What you are looking for is the Magnum Research Lone Eagle.  There are usually a few on the various gun auction sites.  If you run a search, you'll find a review from one of the gun mags a few years ago. I've handled a few at gun shows and found them heavy for a single shot.

Ordenance Tech is the Pre Lone Eagle. They are the SSP-86 the next was the SSP-91. After that they were called the Lone Eagle.
I have several, all in bottle necked calibers, the ejector on the SSP-86 is the weakest and rarely works, I have no ejection issues with the later two.
The handguns are suprisingly accurate and fun to shoot. I much prefer the center grip handgun to a rear grip.

The cannon breech is very strong, I remember they made them in 444, I have one in 308... not sure what other calibers. Weaver #16 scope mounts are the correct mount for this gun.

Thanks for the info, guys. I think I will buy the .44, my "wierd gun gene" demands it!! Hairtrigger, when the ejector goes out, does it still extract?? Is there an "update" to bring the SSP-86 up to later specs?? Also, thanks for the scope base info, it will save me tons of searching ( already tried H&R/NEF and the T/C's ).
Magnum thanks!!

I just use a cleaning rod on my SSP-86 to clear the spent shell as it does not extract. I need to find a stronger spring... just something I have not yet done.
Since the pic I have purchased 3 more SSP (Lone Eagle) handguns
