How to go about accomplishing this ???
« on: September 14, 2008, 11:41:33 AM »
I want to build a custom rifle for one of my friend's that's done a lot for me over the years. He has pretty much the best factory type stuff money can buy.......I guess some of it would be semi-custom.

I want to give him something different. I know nothing about building a rifle or where to go and have stuff done.

I would like to do something along the lines of a Rem. 700 or Sako or any other action done up with a spiral fluted bolt or something cool like that , custom barrel........in like a .257 weatherby. Mcmillan stock. Jewel trigger I guess.

Any advise would be appreciated...........kinda be a project for the next 2 years so I have plenty of time to decide on action, caliber, stock, etc. !!

If he were my friend, I would consider what he doesn't have, and cross-reference that against what he's mentioned he thinks he might like, before I went any further.

For all you really know, he may be tickled pink with an unusual pistol, knife or somesuch other sort of gear.

I have several "well off" friends, and was at a loss for Christmas gifts - so handmade them each their own hunting knife & sheath.
The knives weren't "perfect", but all took them to heart, in the manner the gift(s) were intended.

Thanks. good advise. He does like knives.......but I know less about good knives than I do guns.

He likes long range hunting(he shoots stuff in the 250-350 yrd range more than anyone i know). He has a HS Precision rifle .7mm mag, Kimber Montana .270wsm, Rem. 700 custom shop .300 usm, and a few others he does not shoot much, if any. All of those guns have Zeiss diavari VM/V's, or Smidt bender's ! So another deer gun will be tuff to come up with for sure.

If your friend reload and likes long range, I`m talking 500 yrds and out, I would recommend a 6.5- 284. It is a round that is very popular in the 600 to 1,000 yrd, matches. If your looking for a long range varmint rifle a .22-243 Middlestead or a .22-6mm With a 1 in 8 twist will have him killing coyotes at 600 to 800 yrds. and some beyond.

Buy him a nice heavy barreled varmit rifle in .223, and a varmit call to go with it.
