Bushnell Trophy (update 2-Pic's)
« on: September 14, 2008, 12:17:23 PM »
Hello, I thought that my sbh in a .44 might want one of the Bushnell trophy red dot types (three diff models with all being 1x28)
Unless
It would want one of the TruGlo's  in a 1x30 or even a 2x42

any opinions on these would be apprieciated as I may purchase soon due to one of the Gander Mountain cards that I recieved recently that was quite generous.

The runners up were the Holo's or reflective sights
Barska optics multi reticle electro sight
or
Sitemark Sure shot reflex sight

Do we want to throw these last two out of the competition?
Thanks

I went with the Bushnell Trophy after reading a lot of reviews. It received a 4.6 out of 5.0 for the standard & 3.9 out of 5.0 for the Red/Green model
Out of 51 total reviews. All agreed on the accuracy & the ability to hold zero being very good and there was many heavy kickers listed among the reviewers.
It will be at least another week before I get to try it cause the SBH is at the shop having a Weigand mount installed.

I did have some play time with this unit, the 28mm tube is very adequate for fast target acquisition and the recticle choice is good and bright even with the glare filter in place.
On a very bright day (read yesterday) it only required a setting of two out of 11 on that reostat to see the dot. Bushnell brags of a "Bright Lens" coating technology that will help
You see game better or even find your way up the path. I really could not tell much difference when viewing objects near dusk although it did seem to improve the contrast a bit.
Most importantly, I will have to see if this thing will shoot and hold zero but the reports are good as said.

My Bushnell Trophy came from Gander Mountain. They had a Holo or reflective sight made by Mueller Optics that was around the same price range and looked very good. I let this one pass because GM did not list it on line and I knew nothing about it's abilitys for accuracy or holding zero.

The "smith" finally got done with the sbh mount and I all ready had the bushy in hand. Here is the before & after pic's

I figure about $225 total for the Hogue mono-grip, Weigand mount, the bushy, and the smith's fee for the drill & tap.
This (the scope) is still loose at this time. Everything will get some red loctite but my chemo numbed hands wouldn't let me work on it yesterday. (maybe today as this comes & goes)
If this setup will shoot worth a darn, I will post some pictures on the accuracy & ability to hold zero which are good according to the reviews.

Just a quick update for those who thought this Scope must not be panning out due to the time lenght between post's & promised pictures of the group sizes...

With everything tightend down ( ::)) the first stop was my garage where the SBH was placed in a padded vice and bore sighting was done with the cylinder removed and a mechanics mirror placed in the cylinder frame. It worked out ok I guess as the windage was dead on but the elevation was around 10" high upon firing.

Session one: Six shots were fired to get a rough sight in with the plinking loads. Four additional shots with the same loads were done for fine tuning and out of the ten shots fired, all shots were touching or went through the same hole @ 25yds except for when an adjustment was made of course. Trouble began when I switched to hunting loads. The first three were touching but then the last three started climbing up the paper and I found that the Scope had moved forward a good .040 thousands within the rings. >:(

My Fault as I had chose to use that little allen wrench that was provided with the scope. I could justify this at the time because my generation tends to over tighten things. I used a hair dryer to heat up those ring screws on the threaded end and used a pot holder to protect the main rheostat/recticle adjustment body. That aluminum got hot quickly and softened the Red Loctite to where I was able to pull the scope without any problem. Cleaning/Degreasing was done to the ring threads & screws using the aerosol Brake Parts cleaner. It quickly dissolved the Loctite residue without hurting the black matte finish. Re-assembly was done with more Red Loctite but also with a 3/8 drive allen socket instead of the puny standard wrench that was provided. I went somewhere between really tight and torqued hard during the re-assembly because if this thing would happen to move again, I would put some Burris Signature rings on it.

Session two: Eighteen shots were fired with the hunting loads and they went into one ragged hole at the 25yd range and the scope appears to be holding within the rings. I had to quit for four days after this because of two outpatient surgerys. I would like to get out today but it is sure looking like rain :( I need to make adjustments to move the entire group just a little but will probably put at least 20 more rounds through the gun first to make sure the Scope is going to hold in the rings.

Another six days burned and only another six shots fired and the POS (tongue in cheek remark) scope moved back in the rings again by a good .015 thousands.
Do you suppose that it would "settle in" here? I dont think so and I would not trust it.

A Quick Look At Burris Zee Rings...
My Bushnell Trophy has a 28mm tube on it. The 1" rings would be too small for it by .102 thousands while the 30mm rings would be .074 thousands on the large size.
You would think that one of these set's would work but I cannot find a customer service number listed among the various internet sites so as to ask this question.
If you would know this answer, I would appreciate hearing it.

A Quick Fix?
I took the advice of a local guru and disassembled and cleaned everything for the second time around and used the red locktite not only on the ring screws, but within the
inner rings theirselves and torqued them hard. The excess locktite was squeezed out the sides and immediatley cleaned up. This should fill in the voids that Lapping would
Normally take care of but a set of the Burris rings can be had for about the same price of the Lapping tools! (providing that burris 1" or 30mm will work on my 28mm tube)
I will not shoot until at least tomorrow as I want at least 24hr+ for that loctite to cure.
