Dave - PWS Deer
« on: September 15, 2008, 08:31:43 AM »
So me and some buddies are trying to plan a PWS deer trip, we don't want to run too far, probably stick to naked, perry, and knight, possibly green if the weather is cooperating very well, but most likely not.

Was wondering if you knew any good spots to hunt on knight, we don't really want to run all the way to the south side.  We are planning on towing the boat up to whittier, and running out of there.  Naked and perry we would most likely just hunt the whole thing.  Run up in a few bay, and hike to the middle of the island from there.  Anyways, any advise would be greatly appreciated.  Never hunted PWS before.

From my experience on POW Island, go up into the alpine region at or above timberline and start glassing.  Go early, then lok for bedded down dear during the day.

Good luck!  Sorry to hear about your moose failures!

Whoops, had you confused with Dand....  Hope your moose hunt went better than his!

Seeing this reminds me that Daveinthebush sent me an e-mail a few days back saying that for personal reasons he was not able to continue to spend the time needed to properly moderate this and other forums that he is moderator of. He asked me to either get a co-mod to help or someone to replace him. I need to make that happen so will begin a new thread to that effect here.

Well, I live not to far from Knight Isl, Perry Isl, and the west side of PWS.  I suggest hunting Eleanor Isl on the north end of Knight Isl chain.  The tree edge near the water is good for hunting deer.  In the fall, the deer are there or up a bit above the tree line along the field edges.  Let me know the name of your boat and give me VHF call to Mickey Finn, when you come up Knight Isl passage at the north end.  I live in Falls Bay just south of Main Bay.

I am here though.  The deer will be in the alpine medows way up high.  The snow did not melt off as in past years so all past bets are off.  But usually higher is better.  I don't hunt out of Whittier so no so familuar with that side of the sound.  Don't be surprized to see deer on any island though. I saw three on an island the size of a football field one year.
