Hi:

Does anyone know if the springs that are on the Duke 1 1/2 coilspring trap can be replaced with 1 3/4 coilsprings?

They can but why? If the traps are new and in good shape AND you have confidence in their ability I wouldn't. BUT if they are used or you are planning some canine trapping consider the more compact music wire # 1 1/2 size. hope this helps Mike

The 1 3/4 springs will work just fine if thats what you want in them.

Thanks for the replys. I don't know if i really want to go up to a 1 3/4 spring on my 1 1/2 Dukes. The problem is that after only one very short trapping season, the springs on my 1 1/2 Dukes are weaker than when I bought them. The 1 3/4 Dukes that I bought at the same time did not lose any strength in their springs. If I just replaced the springs with another set of 1 1/2 springs, is there any noticable difference between the different springs that are on the market?

The music wire springs will show a difference in strength. Did you snag any coyotes in those Duke #1 1/2 last year? I used the #1 1/2 padded and caught two in ADC coon sets....toe caught... no problems. I did switch springs to music wire as the traps were a few seasons old and were getting "tired" plus they ARE PADDED! Mike

I have many dozens of duke 1 1/2s and none of them have soft springs yet. If this happened to a lot of them at the same time, I would wonder if you didn't just get a bad batch of springs. Everyone makes mistakes and spring makers are no better than the rest of us.
Maybe though, I just got an excellent bunch of springs.

I heard that boiling your traps to hot or to long weakens the springs. Could this be the case?

I don't think boiling my traps had anything to do with the weak springs. I used speed dip mixed with mineral spirits . The only time they got hot was when I dipped them for about 30 seconds in the hot wax. I think that it might just have been a bad bach of springs. They should be easy to replace.
