30-40 Krag
« on: September 15, 2008, 11:35:01 AM »
If I was gonna do a rechamber for the 30-40 Krag would you use a 30-30 or a .308 bbl? Kurt

It would have to be a 30-30 barrel. The 308 has a larger body diameter than the 30-40 Craig.

I own a nice sporter Krag and I love it. Not quite as much poop as an '06, but not as much pressure, or recoil either.
Keep us in the loop on this. It would be like having a Ruger#3 you could afford!!

This has been discussed before, if you're gonna spend the money on a rechamber, a 30-40 Improved Krag can really get you a good return for you $$.....but so would a 30-06 barrel!! ;D

Yeah, I know Mike.... I spent at least $100 on a reamer rental and dies to shoot the 30-30AI, plus I have to neck turn(had to buy that too!! ::)) the 375 Win brass, doesn't make a lot of sense when I have two 30-06s and two 308Wins and a bunch of others that are ballistically superior, but where's the fun in that!!!  ;D

I have a 30-40 Handi that started life as a 30-30. A gift from a great member here (Thanks buddy!) It has some difficulty with extraction/ejection occaisionally perhaps because of a bit to much polishing of the chamber but the thing is SUPER accurate. I am talking true clover leafs at 100 yards. I think a 30-40 in a Handi is a super idea and it makes a great hunting Handi cartridge/rifle combo...go for it!! I prefer to forget all the AI stuff and go for a factory caliber when I rechamber. It is where you put that first bullet that counts, not if it is going 50 fps faster or is a bit more efficient each time you pull the trigger. I also feel there is something almost magical in hunting with an old cartridge in a single shot. For me it somehow seems to bring me back in time, back to a better time perhaps....<><....:)

I believe there was once a rimmed .30-06 cartridge made for double rifles and drillings.  That would be nice.  I'd never own a Handi in .308 or .30-06 (my favorite cartridge) but I'd like to have one in .30-40 Krag and perhaps one in .303.

What kind of extractor would be needed for the 30-40 Kraig? Thanks. Bob

Most any of the other extractors could be made to work except a 45-70, they'd all have to be cut down. A 45 Colt would be the closest to the Krags .545" rim with a rim diameter of .512", shorten the post about .030" and you'd be good to go.  A .410 ejector would work too on an ejector barrel, a little less trimming.

My name is PHATINJUN and I am a Handiholic. I don't have a 30-30 or a 308... I alrady have a 30-06 and the 7.62x39 pretty much covers the 30-30 so I kind of feel I have a gap in my life haven't found a 7x57 yet and I have about 65 30-40 Krag brass so I have been thinking what the heck you Handiholics understand right? Well I am at the point in this 30-40Krag quest that I am going to send in a reciever and have a bbl fitted, now that things seem to have calmed some at H&R. BUT before I do I have been having thoughts of having a stub done instead for some reason I think I want to have this in a min. of a 24"bbl and should be able to find a long 30-06 bbl some where cheap. Any thoughts on this or should I just get the 30-30 from the factory and be done with it??? I am doing just the straight 30-40 as I already have a 30-06 Handi . It is not like this is gonna be the workhorse of the asenal... just a fun one to have.Is it worth the added cost?? Kurt
