What is the purpose of the tip down fore stock ? my guess is for a vertical grip or maybe to remove the bbl ?  superdownhttp://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/New/37092.jpg

Simple,  It is a "Tactical" forend.  It makes the gun much "cooler" than without it.  No junior Rambo should be without one!  I have a Mossberg 640K from the 60's with a wood stock and black plastic forend, it seems that they updated the concept.

so it's just a vertical grip it does not look like it would be very ergonomic . superdown

Did no one notice Mossberg was making these same "Tip down forends" 20 or 30 years ago?

They are nothing new...and no, they aren't very comfortable!

Yup!  But they are cool.  They were making "Tactical" stocks waaaay before they were the "in" thing.

If you go to the Mossberg site they have a link to a Mossberg collector group listed under the "Resources" tab.  Go to that and you will find a page with all sorts of parts for sale.

Those fold down fore ends were a real 'cool factor'  thing.  Makes a half way decent monopod for shooting prone though.  I think they brought those out in the 40s.

It is a throw back design from the guns they made in the 40's basically a forward vertical grip I have a couple of the old ones it really helps stabilize the grip.

Killed my first 'chuck when about 8 or 9 years old with the stock folded and me laying prone. Still have the gun today, bit worn by 11 years hard use by a kid (me) but then my dad only paid about $30 for the gun new. It was for my 6th birthday. Wish it look like it did new, as the one below does.
