270 barrel length
« on: September 15, 2008, 07:13:56 PM »
is there a big difference in performance using a 24" barrel over a 22" barrel on a 270?

Thanks

You may lose up to 100 fps with the two inches less from 24 to 22,game will never know .
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Once immediately before re-barreling a 7mm Weatherby I cut it from 26 inches to 24 inches, then to 22 inches. Starting with a 160 grain bullet at 3100 fps there was an 80 fps velocity loss for each 2 inches of barrel length. I don't think a .270 would be all that much different. I have rifles with short and long barrels and think bigger advantages of a longer barrels are better balance for offhand shooting and a little less muzzle blast. - DON

My 270 has a 22" barrel and it keeps up with the 24" barrels. I hand Load also.

The 270 as with the '06 responds to long barrels - however for general hunting purposes (typical shots at 250 yds or less) you might as well have an 18 or 20" barrel as you are only losing 35-40 fps per inch. When trying to maximize performance at 400 yards plus a 25 or 26" barrel is not too much for the 270 as you have a pretty health dose of powder for the bore size and bc's are not as good as 6.5's in most cases.

My ruger ultra light has a 20 inch brl. and it is a 270 cal. It has been years since I chronied any 270 loads. I point it at caribou they fall over and die.I only shoot the 140 gr TSX bullet in my 270 to accurate and penetrates to well to use anything else. Boring I know.
