K.I.S.S. Reloading!
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:56:57 AM »
Keep It Simple Stupid!
I needed some ammo to sight in my new 308 barrel last week.
Decided to just use the starting load on the info that came with the Lee dies.
This is the way reloading should be!

1. Resized left over 7-08 brass to 308.
2. Trimmed brass with Lee trimmer on drill.
Also cleaned with steel wool in this step.
3. Clean primer pocket and prime with auto prime.
4. Charge with 3.1cc of varget and seat bullet. Yes, I did double check that 3.1cc was 44 grains just like they said it was.
Done!
I made 10 rounds in 10 minutes. Total!

I'm not even sure I want to work up this load.
Accuracy was pretty good.
So what if it's not fast my 270 will do that.

K.I.S.S

A term that I learned at the start of my day's on the primitive blackpowder circuit and one that was applied to making anything from clothing to camping utensiles.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
I was going to check your step number 4 out but my cell phone does not list cc's in the unit conversion :o this thing (the phone) must be a piece of junk ;)

I am glad to see that you are doing some safe & simple reloading. It can become more complex though as one can tend to become more critical of all aspects of the case prep once they get a good foothold.

Reminds me of a time before the internet came along (before Al Gore invented it) when I could take the available bullets/primers/brass and make loads for my .308 that did everything. They could be counted on to make nice tight groups, kill elk, deer, antelope, coyotes all using the same load.

There is no strait conversion from cc to grains. It is different for each powder.
The Lee powder measure and dippers are labeled in cc.
Each Die set comes with a list of common loads and shows staring charges in grains or cc.
Also my powder measure has a conversion chart for must powders.
The dipper is usually the starting load for the most common powder. Makes loading about as hard as making coffie.

Reloading has become very complex for me and my 1/2 moa rifles.
Trickleing compressed loads into sorted brass seated out near the lands and all.
This little prodject was a relief.

Some times its nice to just RE-LOAD and not handload .  ;) I use the dippers a lot for light plunking loads .

I know what you mean. Over time my reloading has gotten more and more "detailed". I started out with a Lee kit for the 22 Hornet ( an older model H &R a 158 I think) then I got a 222 Rem ( in a Remington 788) and another Lee kit. Then I thought this would be nice and that, next thing you know I am very well North of $1000 worth of stuff.
I have given it some thought even before your post - a Lee dipper set. Find the proper load and then find a dipper that matches it. I could load at the shooting bench - and not worry about the wind, messin' up my scale.

308 brass is one of the cheapest to find.  Unless you no longer have a 7-08, I wouldn't bother resizing.  Just sell it and buy 308.

I used to make 25-06 from 30-06.  Rifle shot much better groups once I accumulated the real thing.

I no longer have a 7mm-08 and don't know anybody who does.
Also my dealer claims 308 brass is back ordered.
Besides it wasn't any harder than normal resizeing.

Charles, please let me know where you are buying your cheap .308 brass! I've been waiting for months to buy some, even if it is once fired, but nobody I've checked with has any Win. or Rem. .308 brass and can't say when they will get any.

Thanks in advance for any information.
EDIT: Just looked, and Midsouth indicates they have some Remington .308 Win. brass in stock! Oh, happy days are here again...

Bill

You may want to check Midsouth , Sinclairs and GIBrass .

All 3 show 308 brass , GIBrass has Rem Mil pulldown cases for $30 per 100 , Midsouth has Rem Comm for $18 per 50 and Sinclair has Hornady Match for $41 per 100 .

Everyone else says Out Of Stock . and nothing cheap !  ;)

God bless your heart!  A man with an understanding of what he needs and how to get it is hard to find!

It seems that most of us who post on the web are almost fanantic either for high volume weekends of spray and pray or are anal about bench shooting for tiny groups.   But none of us are slow to prescribe to others exactly what they should do or use to load the way we do, which is rarely the point of anyones question.  YOU just injected a bit of common sense into what often becomes a slow moving argument on what other people should accept as "best" simply because it serves US best!

It has to be hard for a newby to seperate fact from fiction but you just did it quite well.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue

I don't blame you for using the 7mm-08 Remington brass you have on hand.

I do the opposite, I re-sized 308 Winchester into 7mm-08 Remington.

The 308 Winchester brass is a lot cheaper and more plentiful.

I shoot a lot of milsurp rifles with rare calibers and have found that the cheapest way to get brass is to buy rounds from the old eastern block countries, shoot them, and collect the brass. Often the only raw brass supplier is Norma. With these rifles high buck Norma brass is not going to make a lot of difference (I do use Norma for my Contenders).

For my Mosin I bought a Lee loader. It was about the same price as a set of Lee dies. I just wanted to try this simple setup. It works neat, and the powder dipper produces pretty consistant results.
