Pale coyotes
« on: September 16, 2008, 12:18:25 PM »
Yesterday I was out looking over an old trapline.I haven't trapped it for 3 years.I saw what I first thought was an antelope fawn on a ridge about 400 yds. away.I put the binoculars on it and it was a coyote. It was standing almost broadside looking at me.It was white up it's side from it's belly almost to it's back center line.We have Milk River coyotes here.I have caught real pale coyotes in late Oct and Nov. But I don't remember seeing one this light in color this early for a long time. The trail I was travelling had lots of fresh coyote droppings. They were full of grasshoppers and plums. At sunset they all tuned up,I voice howled in answer until I was hoarse.I got 7 answers from 7 different points of the compass.Obviously a good "hatch".This area is big rough rolling pastures dotted with potholes. It is surrounded by stubble fields. The pastures are ideal denning areas.Lots of Buffalo berry, wild Plum and chokecherry patches.Very few ranchers and they told me to go get them.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!
