Gummy R3 Recoil Pad
« on: September 18, 2008, 02:35:14 PM »
I picked up an as new CDL stock but the R3 recoil pad is gummy & sticky.  I've cleaned it with alcohol & even I even tried Armor All on it.  It's still sticky.  Anyone else had this problem.  I don't really like these Simms type recoil pads.  They are too soft to take rugged use IMO.  I'm guessing I'll have to order the new Remington Super Cell pad.

Man, any type of dirt or residue that touches those recoil pads seem to stick to them forever.  They never want to come clean.  Maybe they have a static electricity issue or something.  I much prefer a pad like a Pachmayer Decelerator, or something along those lines.

Limbsaver will replace any pads that melt, dunno if they or Remington will tho. I prefer to give them a coat of Kick-Eez Slick-Eez, it prevents stuff from sticking to it and it doesn't grab your clothing when you throw it to your shoulder. The Decelarator is a nice looking pad, but a Limbsaver is king for felt recoil relief. ;)

I've had Limbsaver's on a light Win. 1300 12ga turkey gun, a couple of Encores, and on an Omega.  It's probably just me, but the recoil on my old 30-06 Encore felt just the same with the Sims as is did with the factory one.  I did notice a bit of difference on the 12ga with the 3" magnum loads (after a couple of shots, it hurt with both of them, LOL).

Send the defective pad to Remington and they wil replace it.  There were some issues with the early Limbsaver/R3 pads where they basically started breaking down and turning gummy as you described.  The new ones are good to go.

I for one am a fan of the R3 recoil pad. I have shot the same caliber with it and another with a different pad and the R3 wins hands down for sure. I know it makes a 7MM Rem. Mag. a pussycat. Dale

I cleaned it real good with mineral spirits, washed it with dishwashing liquid, let it dry, and sealed it with Testors Dull Coat.  It seems fine now.  I may send it back if it acts up again..

Mine is the same on My 2 yr. old Model 7 CDL. I can scratch the rubber off with My fingernail. Think I'll let Rem. know about this. They should replace it.

I have a pair of binnos and a range finder that must be made of the same stuff as both of them are the same way, very sticky.
As far as recoil is concerned I have a Limbsaver on a 1300 WIN. syn camo stock and it made a world of difference with 3" mag #4 buck and it really calmed down my BPS 10ga with 3.5" mag #4 buck also. Wish they made prefits for the Handys!!!

Limbsaver does, the 10003 and 10601 for slug guns which fit a lot of laminated stocks and may fit others, as well as the 10018 that fits adult synthetic monte carlo stocks, print the templates following their instructions and compare them.  ;)

I called Remington today and told them about my gummy recoil pad. He asked me for the serial number of my rifle. He determined in his computer that on my non laminated wooden stock (700 Mountain Rifle) that the recoil pad is glued onto the stock. He's sending me a new stock. I couldn't believe the outstanding customer support that Remington provided.

That is outstanding Val. I like a lot of different brands of firearms and Remington is definitely one of them. That kind of customer service says a lot about their company.

My brand new Remington 700 Mountain Rifle stock arrived today. It's a very nice piece of wood. The recoil pad is bolted on to this stock. The original stock with the gummy recoil pad had the recoil pad bonded onto the stock. That's why Remington sent me the brand new stock. My hat is off to Remington for their excellent customer support.

Unfortunately I bought my stock second hand.  Without a serial number to give the factory, I don't think Remington is gonna help me.

I am having the same problem.  I went to pull out my rifle this morning from the case to look it over, getting excited about the season etc. and when I did the recoil pad was stuck to the foam and actually rippid some of the pad materal off "not the foam from the case"  I am pissed! to say the least, so need to know who has had success in getting a replacement?  Is it best to call Remington or Limbsaver, and at what phone numbers?  BTW:  MDL 700 CDL 30/06 wood stock satin finish etc.

Thanks in advance to all who can help!...Max

I had the same problem with the pad on my243 CDL and a good friend also had the same problem with his 7-08 CDL.  I know when I called they never asked for the serial number and they actually sent me a new stock even though I told them I only wanted a pad.  My friend received a new pad from them so I don't know why the person I talked to sent me a stock.  I ended up buying a new prefit pad locally so I could keep the extra stock in case I wanted to use it for a project down the road.

forget the r3.. get the super cell, It works great and I work for the company that makes them for Remington. It breaks my heart to see blemished products destroyed.  But that is what Remington wants. They are picky.  A great product!
