new bow woes
« on: September 19, 2008, 07:37:48 AM »
I have a miserable time whenever it comes time for a new bow. I've been in the process of buying one for ten years now :D. The trouble is, I shoot left-handed with a 32" draw length. I really like the short axle to axle, fast shooting bows, but seldom do you find one with more than 30" draw length, and most are shorter than this. I have found bows with the right draw length, but there was always something else about them I didn't like, such as speed, let-off, etc. I don't want to settle for something I don't like just because it has the right draw length. Does anyone know if bow companies will take one of their production bows and modify the draw length for a longer draw? Is it safe to put a longer string on todays bows to get an extra couple of inches draw? Anybody else in the same boat?

I did a quick google search and got a few bows at 31" draw. Maybe that and a 1" release loop. I get my Mathews at 30" draw and 3/4" loop to get my length. Maybe one way around it.

Thanks MG66. That's the setup I have now, 31" with a long nock loop. The bow I have is 18 years old. It still shoots great, and I've taken deer with it, but I would love to get a new one.

I just found out that PSE makes their new X-force in an LD(long draw model)!!!!!!! I hate to pay more for a bow than a good rifle costs, but....

Big,

I made a similar post on another site recently. My problems the other direction. I need between a 24 and 25 inch drawlength. To make matters worse yet, I'm a lefty.

What I was told, was that some bows can be lengthened or shortened by changing the modules at the cams. You'll have to ask at a GOOD bow shop, though. Most of the "big box stores" carry ones that fit most folks...28-30 draw and right handed. Most of the folks at these stores wouldn't have a clue as what to do about changing the modules. Good luck! I'm still looking.

I'm in the same boat with you, left handed and 32 inch draw. I gave up on compounds and in the process of learning to shoot instinctively with a recurve. ;D It is a real challenge after starting with and shooting only compounds. New compound bows today are outrageous in price, and I simply refuse to pay that much for a bow.

I used to have the same issue with finding a left handed bow that I liked. I just learned to shoot right handed. It made life a lot easier. I guess some people don't want to bother with it, but I was young at the time and it really only took about 3 days to get used to it.

Whiskey101, I don't think I could shoot right hand glad it worked for you. Jon, I want to stick with compounds but like you, I am amazed at the prices. I don't know maybe another 10 years... :D
