What size groups are you getting?  Some barrels, both custom and factory just won't shoot.  Also, what kind of scope?  For little groups, you need magnification and an objustable objective.  Those are keys, as a lot of the pistol scopes have odd factory set paralax distance.

Consistant grip and trigger control are also important.

1-2" groups,I cant beleive all bbls are off.I have a TC 2x7,tasco6x32 AO,and a cheaper simmons rifle scope on my 16" 223.OK groups for hunting but I know they'll do better. I do get occasional nice groups but not consistantly.I've heard shooting off a hard rest(my bower) can cause vertical stringing but mine are just all over not just vertical.SGB

I use a Bower rest.  I don't see any verticle stringing using it.  One thing to remember using the rest, don't try and control the recoil.  Let the gun recoil and don't try to hold it down.

Try a 3-12 burris scope.  The extra power and AO really help with shooting groups.  I've got a 2-7 T/C scope and they are good scopes.  They do have some parallex at 100 yards though and that will hurt groups.

You may want to try floating the barrel away from the forend.  Not sure what kind of forend your using, as Don has used several different methods.  You may want to try some washers under the dovetail locks.

Let another experienced Contender shooter try grouping with your guns.  With his target results you may be able to determine if it is the gun or the shooter that needs work.

Start by making sure all screws are not to long in the base.Next make sure they are all tight.Free-float the forend as well.Make sure you grip it the same way every time and if you use a bag rest it near the trigger gaurd.Make a dummy round for each caliber you have and let a freind laod your gun for you this way you have no idea if the gun will go boom. This will help you in knowing if it is you.
